3 Claims.

My invention relates to a holder for scarfs when not in use, the holder being provided inside of the garment of the wearer, so that the scarf will lay smoothly against the inside of the garment, instead of bulging a pocket into which the wearer was heretofore compelled to cram the scarf when not in use.

I am aware that arrangements have been suggested in the prior art to removably attach a scarf underneath the collar portion of garments substantially in wearing position, from which the user may drop the ends of the scarf, when not folded around the neck. In such arrangements the scarf remains for a substantial portion of its length wrinkled underneath the garment collar and its ends hang down more or less wrinkled beneath the back of the garment, where the latter should fit the smoothest, producing unsightly bulges, and making it dilficult, if not impossible, for the wearer to pull the ends up from back of his shoulder blades without taking off the garment, in case he Wishes to wear the scarf around the neck.

All of these disadvantages are avoided in my novel arrangement which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a View of the left inside half of an overcoat showing one novel form of holding the scarf when not in use, and Fig. 2 represents a similar view, showing a modified form of the scarf holder.

Referring to Fig. 1, I is a preferably fairly wide ribbon, which may be made of the same material as the garment lining, and may contain stiffening material, such as several layers of buckram or the like, to prevent the ribbon from wrinkling. This stiffener is inserted principally for the purpose of appearance and any suitable material may be used for the ribbon without stiifener. The ribbon has alength approximately equal to the width of the average scarf and is sewed at both ends to the garment lining or, at any rate, to the inside of the garment, as shown at a-a, to form a flat stretched loop so that the scarf 4 can be hung over this loop to lie smoothly against the inside of the garment as shown. The strap or ribbon I is located near the level of the sleeve hole III, in order to take advantage of the full length of the coat below the sleeve to cover the scarf. In order to prevent the scarf from slipping out of this loop, a second stretched loop is provided a few inches below loop I. This loop, which may be of similar material and built as loop I, consists, however, of two portions 2 and 3 sewed at their outer ends respectively at b and c to the inside of the 1934, Serial No. 750,266 (Cl. 2-93) garment. At their free ends are provided respectively the complementary elements of a fastening device, such as of a snap-fastener 5 5 by which the free p ends can be fastened together and stretched over both scarf ends after 5 the scarf is placed over loop I. This second loop prevents, through friction, the scarf from gradually sliding off loop I. The short loop end 3, as shown, is provided to facilitate the fastening of the two free ends of loops 2 and 3 together. It 10 is quite obvious, without specific illustration, that loop portion 2 may be made long enough to stretch all the way across the scarf ends and be fastened by the means 5 5 directly to the inside of the garment. 15

It will be noted that in this manner the scarf is stored away, as it were, on the garment flat, inconspicuously and safely while not in use, whether the garment is worn or not. If the user wears the garment already and desires to put on the scarf, he merely pulls the latter up and out of loop I without even opening loop 2, 3; if he desires to store away the scarf he proceeds by first opening loop 2, 3, then hanging the scarf over loop I and then re-fastening the free ends of loop 2-3, all of which may be done without taking 01f the garment.

In the modified form of my invention, shown in Fig. 2 the function of the divided loop 2, 3 of Fig. 1 is replaced by a bottomless pocket 6, as 30 it were, which is provided in the lining I of the garment. When the scarf 4 is hung over loop I the same as in Fig. 1, its free ends are slid into pocket 6 in which they can hang flat and straight down securely behind the lining 1.

I claim:-

1. The combination with a coat, of a scarf holder, comprising a horizontal strap adapted to support the bight of a scarf hung over the same, said strap being fixed at its two ends to the inside 40 of the coat near the level of the sleeve hole, and means close below said strap adapted to overlie the two depending ends of the scarf.

2. The combination described in claim 1, wherein said last-mentioned means is in the form 45 of a strap including a separable fastener to open the same to receive the depending ends of the scarf.

3. The combination described in claim 1, wherein said last-mentioned means is in the form 50 of a pocket sufficiently long to receive substantially the full length of the depending ends of the scarf.
