FLASK CLOSURE John B. LeRoy, Mullens, W. Va., assignor of onefourth to Claude Jarrett and one-fourth to H. R. Caudill, both of Besoco, Va;
Application November 13, 1933, Serial No. 697,844
2 Claims. (01. 220-24) This invention relates to closures especially adapted for flasks employed byf-miners to contain a supply of carbide used'for carbide lamps and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and. quickly removed from the flask so that the latter may be readily filled with carbide and is so constructed that the carbide may be easily dispensed from the flaskwithout danger or waste when it is desired to fill a lamp with carbide and when closed will exclude'air and moisture from the carbide and thereby maintain the latter in proper position for efficient use.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement ofparts to be hereinafter more fully described and. claimed.
For a complete understanding of my inven-- tion, reference is to be had to the following .description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating a closure constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the closure in locked position. 7
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 3. i V
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 2. r V
Figure 6 is a perspect've view illustrating a latch plate.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a fragmentary portion of a flask adapted for containing carbide and is provided with a screw threaded neck 2 having an inwardly I extending cam-shaped flange 3, the ends of which are relatively spaced, as shown in Figure 4 To exclude moisture and air to the interior of the flask a closure 4 is provided and consists of a screw threaded sleeve5 adapted for threaded connection to the neck 2 and has formed integrally therewith a plate 6 provided with a semi-circular opening 1 thereinforming a discharge mouth to the closure. A plate 8 is suitably secured to the plate 6 and has hinged thereto a flanged cover 9 carrying upon its inner face a gasket Ill; The
' ture therethrough. A reverse turning movement inner face of the lid.
cover 9 also has secured to its inner face alatch plate II, a portion of which is ofiset, as shown at l2, to form a lip for engagement with the cam flange 3 of the neck 2 of the flask. The plate ll 7 is'bent angularly to form a stop I3 adapted to' op- 5 erate between the ends of the cam flange 3. i
In operation, the flaskris first filled with car; bide and the sleeve '5 is threaded to the neck 2 and the lid 9 swungv into a closed position bringing 10.
the latch plate or the lip l2 thereof adjacent one. end of the cam flange 3 and. by turning the sleeve 7 5 in one direction the lip 12 rides under the cam flange and draws the lid tightly in engagement with the sleeve 5 closing the opening I or sealing saidopening against the passage of air or, moisof the sleeve 5 will disengage the hp [2 from the cam flange and the stop l3 moves into engage-' ment withpone end of the cam flange limiting the turning movement of the sleeve in said direction which positions the lid free to be swung into an open position so. that the carbide may be readily dispensed from the flask. v While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my, invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed. 7 Having described the invention, I claim:
1. In combination with aflask having a neck and a cam flange, a sleeve rotatably'mounted in the neck and having a discharge opening,-a lid 7 hinged to the sleeve for closing said opening, a latchplate secured to the lid, and an ofiset lip formed on the latch plate to ride underthe cam flange for securing the lid in a closed position. 2. In combination'with a. flask having a threaded neck. and a cam flange, a sleeve threaded to the neck and having a discharge opening, a lid hinged'to the sleeve for closing said opening, a. latch plate secured to the lid, an ofiset lip formed on the latch plate to ride under the cam flange for securing the lid in a closed position, and a stop on the latch plate-to operate between ends of the cam flange, and a gasket secured to the JOHN 3. LE Roy;
