UNITED STATES JAMES MARTIN COUGHLIN, 0F KINGSTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO W. B. BERTELS & SON 00., ING., OF WILKES-BARBIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
DRUMHEAD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. CoUcHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Drumhead, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby a closure may be held in place within the end member of a container or drum, and, specifically, the invention aims to provide novel means whereby the latches which hold the closure in place may be sealed so as to retain the closure.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device con structed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a fragmental transverse section wherein parts appear in elevation.
The numeral 1 marks the metal end member of a drum or receptacle, the member 1 including a body 2 having a projecting flange 3 carrying an outstanding lip 4. A circumferential seat 5 is located at the inner edge of the body 2 and carries an inwardly Application filed January 19, 1923- Serial No. 613,671.
extended sleeve 6 wherein fits closely and frictionally, the side wall 7 of a hollow closure 8 including a bottom 9, the side wall 7 carrying a bead 10 which, cooperating with the seat 5, prevents the closure from sliding inwardly through the sleeve 6. Latches 11 are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends, as at 12, on the body 2 of the end member 1, and, when the latches 11 are disposed radially of the end member 1, the outer ends of the latches are engaged with the flange 3 as clearly shown in Figure 2. The inner ends of the latches 11 are pro vided with openings 14 adapted to receive seals 15 and it will be clear that the seals 15, cooperating with the side wall 7 of the closure 8 will prevent the latches 11 from being swung into such a position that the closure 8 may be removed out of the sleeve 6 which forms the opening in the end member 1. I
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, an end member, a hollow closure located within the end member and comprising a side wall, a plurality of latches pivotally mounted on the end member for swinging movement in a direction substantially at right angles to the ture.
