IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
' n Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,567, dated December 15, 1877; application filed November 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that we, WILLIAM B. BURT- nNETT and GEORGE W. 0001:, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement inBrushes,
. of which the following is a specification: v Referring to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is r a side view'of a brush to which our improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a detail section taken through the line a: 0:, Ti g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of wall, whitewash, varnish,
paste, paint, and other brushes, where the butts of the bristles are confined by a metal band," in such a way that the bristles may be held more firmly in place, that the nails will not be drawn out by the metal band when the parts of the brushfareswollen by-moisture, and that the side partsoftthe metal band may .act as a springto make the brushes more elastic. i i I The invention consists in brushes in which the metalband that confines the butts of the said nails from being drawn by a strain upon the said band, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the handle of the brush. B (l is the metal band that surrounds the butts of the bristles, and D are the nails that fasten the band 0 and the bristles B to the handle A.
A leather band may be passed around the butts of the bristles B, beneath the metal band C, if desired. The metal band 0 is slitted upon one or both sides vof the nails D, so that the parts or sections of the band 0 through which the nails D pass may be drawn by the said nails beneath the level of the said band C to crimp the bristles, and thus prevent the said bristles from being drawn out. These slits may meet at an angle upon one side of the nails D, so as to form angular sections, which are drawn down by the nails; or the said slits may be made longitudinally with the band C, or in any other direction that will form sections to be drawn down by the nails across the butts of the bristles to crimp them.
By this construction, when the wood and bristles of the brush are swollen by the oil, paint, or other fluid or moist substance in which the brush is used, the slits will relieve the sections of the brush through which the nails D pass from the strain, so that the said nails will not be loosened or drawn out by the strain or leverage of the band.
By this construction, also, the side parts of the band 0 will be allowed to yield while the brush is being used, making the brush more elastic.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Brushes in which the metal band that confines the butts of the bristles is slitted, in such a way that the parts or sections that receive the nails may be drawn by said nails beneath the level of the said band to crimp the bristles and prevent the said nails from being drawn by a strain upon the said band, substantially as herein shown and described.
