COMBINATION FURNITURE Fil ed March 21, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor J P Ila/fares f1 llomey Patented Dec. 18, 1 934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION FURNITURE James P. Walters, Pilot Mountain, N. 0. Application March 21, 1934, Serial No. 716,692
2 Claims. (01. 155-41) This invention is a combination stool, step ladder, ironing board and high-chair.
Among the objects of the invention is theprovision of such an article of furniture that is extremely simple in construction, economical, and is otherwise well adapted for the purpose designed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is aside elevational view of the article of furniture when used either as a kitchen stool or step ladder.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the parts in position for use of the device as an ironing board.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the device when used as a high-chair.
Figures 4 and 5 are sectional views taken substantially on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 respectively of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view through the device with the parts arranged when the same is used as a high chair and Figure 7 is a perspective view of the tray.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals 8 designates the inclined front legs of the device while 9 designates the rear legs thereof, and as shown the legs 8 and 9 are outwardly inclined. The legs 8 are connected with the legs 9 through the medium of cleats 10 at the upper ends of the legs, and horizontal bars 11 inter mediate the ends of said legs. Supported by the bars 11 between the legs 8 is a step 12.
The top step of the device is adapted to serve I both as a step and as a seat and includes a fixed section 13 and a section 14 hinged to the section 13 as at 15.
Intermediate its ends an ironing board 16 is secured to thefree end of the section 14. and is braced with respect thereto by diagonal brace members 17.
The braces 17 are connected to the legs 9 by foldable braces 18, and for securing the ironing board 16 in a vertical position, or in the position shown in Figure 3, suitable hooks 19 are provided on the legs 9 and are engageable with the eyes of bolts 20 that serve to connect one end of the foldable braces 18 with the braces 17.
The article of furniture also'includes a frame indicated generally by the reference numeral 21 that is adapted to straddle the ironing board 16 and which supports a tray 22 for quick conversion of the device into a high chair. Frame 21 as shown includes side members 23 which support between their forward ends tray 22, the latter being secured to the side members 23 in any suitable manner. The rear ends of the side members 23 are enlarged and are connected by cross bars 24. On the inner faces of the sides 22 and spaced inwardly from the strips 24 are retaining cleats 25 between which and the bars 24 the edges of the ironing board 16 is accommodated as suggest ed in Figure 6, and in a manner to retain the tray in proper position at all times when the device is used as a high chair.
The arrangement of the parts are as shown in Figure 1 when the device is used either as a kitchen stool or step ladder. When used for ironing purposes the section 14 is swung to a vertical position placing the ironing board 16 in horizontal position, and the foldable braces 18 are extended and serve to secure the ironing board in the position shown in Figure 2.
When the device is used as a high chair the frame 21 is slid vertically downwardly of the upper portion of the ironing board 16, and the assembly, under such conditions, is as shown in Figure 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pair of spaced parallel arms, a tray secured to and supported between said arms at one end of the 1atter, and end pieces connecting the ends of the arms remote from said tray, and cleats on the inner faces of said arms adjacent the last named end thereof and adapted to cooperate with the end pieces for slidably engaging said arms'with the side edges of a suitable supporting device.
2. For use with a combination article of fumiture including a combination chair and step ladder and a swingably mounted ironing board adapted to serve as a back for the chair when the ironing board is in vertical position; a tray having extending laterally from one edge thereof a pair of spaced coextensive arms adapted at their free ends to straddle the ironing board, and said arms at said free ends being provided with opposed guide members forming therebetween channels for slidable engagement with the side edges of the ironing board and in a manner to retain the arms in a substantially horizontal position when said ironing board is in vertical position, said arms being provided with means to engage the seat member of said article of fumiture and thereby support the tray in operative position relative to the seat of the chair.
JAMES P. WALTERS.
