Description

H W WHITE Chin-Rest for Violins.
No. 196,962. Patented Nov. 6,1877.
WITNESSES f4 PETERS, PHOTOUTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON n C -c in its enlarged body 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM W. W'HITE, OF YANKTON, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT I N CHlN-RESTS FOR VIOLINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,962, dated November 6, 1877; application filed May 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM W. WHITE, of Yankton, in the county of Yankton and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chin-Rests for Violins, of which the following is a specifica tion:
My invention relates to improved means for adapting a chin-rest to fit violin-bodies of different widths, and means for preventing the chin-plate from resting entirely on the face of said violin-bodies.
My invention consists, first, in constructing or prm'iding the chin-plate with lugs on. the under side, so as to adapt it to fit violins hav in g margins of different sizes.
My invention consists, secondly, in providing the screw which connects the chin-plate and clamp-hook with an enlarged body havin g grooves forming ribs, on which the clamphook is adjusted.
My invention consists, thirdly, in beveling the ribs of the screw on one side, and also beveling the portion of the clamp-hook adapted to engage with the ribs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved chin-rest. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the under side of the chin-plate and connecting-screw. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp-hook.
E may represent a chin'plate, which is provided with two lugs, A A, to adapt it to fit the face of the violin. O is a screw inserted in the chin-plate, and provided with grooves These grooves form ribs 0, which are beveled 011 one side to adapt them to fit a clamp'hook. D is a clamp-hook,
whose lower portion grasps the under side of the violin-body, and whose upper portion is beveled at (I, so as to fit the grooves c.
The rest is shown as applied to aviolin-body in Fig. 1, the body being represented by dotted lines.
To apply the device, the screw is partly inserted in the chin-plate, and the chin-plate is placed on the instrument. The loop on the clamp-bolt is passed over the screw-head to engage with a groove on the enlarged body,
the lower portion of the clamp-bolt grasping the lower side of the instrument. The chinrest is secured by turning the screw so as to tighten its grasp.
My improved chin-rest is, by its peculiar construction, adapted to fit violins of difi'erent thicknesses.
The chin plate is also adapted to fit the margins of different violins.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The chin-plate E, provided with lugs A A, to adapt the plate to fit the margin of violins, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The screw O, having its body 0 enlarged and provided with grooves c, in combination with a chin-rest and clamp-hook for violins.
3. The combination, with the screw O, havthe purpose set forth.
H. WV. WHITE.
