Description
PATEN TED MAY 15. 1906.
C. J. HINDMAN. PIANO STRINGING HAMMER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT, 14. 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIANO-STRINGING HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed September 14, 1905. Serial No. 278,518.
To all whonc it may concern:
Be it known that I, OARLos J. HINDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Stringing Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce an instrument for stringing pianos which is adapted to automatically lay the wrap on the tuning-peg in a neat and symmetrical coil.
The nature of the invention, which is very simple, will clearly appear from the descrip tion and claim following, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a stringing-hammer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the lower part thereof in the same plane as Fig. 1 or a parallel plane.
The improvement which forms the subjectmatter of this invention is the result of a con sideration of the needs of blind musicians who tune pianos. Owing to their infirmity and also to the closeness of the tuning-pegs to each other in the frame, it is practically impossible for a blind tuner by the use of his fingers to guide the piano-string as it coils on the peg, so as to produce a smooth and uniform coil. The improved tool enables him to do this and without the trouble or labor of using his fingers among the pegs at all. It is equally convenient for the tuner who has the use of all his senses.
Referring now to the nates the hammer, with a socket-wrench B secured thereto adapted to take the squared head of the tuning-peg C. An enlarged portion D of this wrench or shank is screwdrawings, A desigthreaded, and on this is screwed a milled handpiece E, small enough with a reduced lower end F to pass down among the pegs G to engage the The screwthread may be either righthanded or the reverse, as shown. If the thread is left-handed, as shown in Fig. 1, and the wrench turned to the right, the coil will be laid on the peg downwardly. The same action applied to the device shown in Fig. 2 would coil the string upwardly on the peg. When the string has been brought to the proper pitch, the handpiece is released from the string either by turning it forward or first backing off the wrench, when the hand piece is of course more easily turned forward a little to disengage the hook.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved stringing-hammer, having a socket-wrench to engage the tuning-pegs, a screw-threaded portion thereon, and a handpiece correspondingly screw-threaded to run thereon, the handpiece having a hook at its lower end to engagethe string, and whereby a uniform coil is made as the wrench is turned and the handpiece held.
In testimony whereof I aifix in presence of-two witnesses.
CARLOS J. HINDMAN. Witnesses J. M. ST. JOHN, F. J. KULIcEK.
