UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. EDMANS AND HAROOUBT MOTT, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMSa Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,440, dated October 23, 1877 application filed June 8, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. EDMAN and HARCOURT Mom, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being, had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bed-bottom, as will be hereinaiter'more fully set forth. In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, refer-. ring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of our bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed view, showing one mode of fastening the springs to the cross-bars of the frame.
A A represent two parallel side bars or rails,
connected near each end by cross-bars B B, as
shown. These cross-bars are made rounded on their upper and outer surfaces, while their inner and bottom surfaces are made straight. G 0 represent the wire springs, which are passed horizontally through holes in the crossbars B, from the inner to the outer sides there of, and the ends of the springs are bent from the outside over the top of said bars inward. On the extreme ends of the springs C are formed eyes a, which are slipped over the ends of pins 1), said pins beings passed horizontally through the slots D D a suitable distance from their ends, and the ends of said pins project sufficiently far beyond the edges of the slats to allow the eyes a of the springs to be passed over them.-
The springs O maybe made in any suitable form, and attached to the cross-bars B only, so that their extreme-ends form the eyes a, as described, to receive the ends of the pins I).
Haring thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I In a spring bed-botto1n, the combination oi the wire springs 0, having their centers se cured to the cross bars of the supportin frame, and having eyes a formed in their ends, the: slats D, and the pins 11 passing through the slats, and their ends supported in the eyes of p the springs, substantially as herein set forth. In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set om hands this 30th day of May, 1877.
