Description
J. HOFFMAN Street-Sprinkler.
ATTORNEYS.
N. PETERS, PHOTO LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN HOFFMAN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-SPRINKLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,016, dated October 9, 1877; application filed July 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN HOFFMAN, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Street- Sprinkler, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved street-sprinkling device, shown as attached to the curb-stone; and Fig. 2 is a front View of the same, partly in section, on the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in street-sprinklers; and consists in the employment of aperforated pipe attached to a streetcurb or similar support, and connected with a hydrant or water-supply, the perforated pipe being provided with a sliding cover or cap having perforations, which may be made to register, or partly register, with the perforations in the pipe, or to close entirely the perforations, so as to vary or cut off the supply of water, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a perforated pipe, attached by guide-staples s to the outer face of a street curb-stone. The perforated pipe is connected by a suitable pipe or pipes with a hydrant,B, or water-main.
O represents a cap, partially covering and concentric with the perforated pipe A, and provided with perforations and a recessed lug, u, at its end, by means of which it may he slid back and forth in the guides s by means of the hand-lever D, the lower end of which engages with the recess in the lug u.
By this construction the cap can, by means of the hand-lever, be made to register its perforations exactly with those in the pipe A to obtain the greatest flow of water; or the perforations in the cap can be made to partially register with those in the perforated pipe to lessen the flow of water; or the perforations may be entirely closed, thus cutting off the flow entirely; or the flow may be varied at pleasure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The perforated pipe A, attached to a streetcurb or suitable support, and connected by a suitable pipe with a hydrant or water-supply, in combination with the sliding perforated cap O, having recessed lug u, hand-lever D, and guides s, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN HOFFMAN.
