Description
S. KAUFPMANN.
Overalls.
No. 195,894. Patented Oct. 9, 1877.
I ll uq l l .WITNESSES INVENTOR JW N. PETERS, FHDTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASMMGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL KAUFFMANN, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,894, dated October 9, 1877; application filed June 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KAUFFMANN, of Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Overalls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyih g drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the body and a portion of the legs of a pair of overalls embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the part forming one-half of the body and one leg of the overalls. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the buckles employed in adjusting the waistband; and Fig. 4. represents a general plan of a part of the waistband, showing the manner of connecting the same at its ends.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of connecting the ends of the waistband of overalls, so as to be readily adjusted, andialso to so construct the overalls-as that no seam will be required on the inner side of each leg.
To that end my invention consists in providing an elastic band, which is loosely fitted into the seam of the back part of the waistband, and having attached at each end a buckle, provided with a hook formed thereon, and so arranged as to take into a series of metal loops adjustably attached to straps connected to the outer-surface of the front part of the waistband, and so that the waistband may be lengthened or shortened by changing the hooks from one loop to another, and by adjusting the loops upon the straps.
In the drawing, A represents the, overalls, which are formed of two parts, B B, cut in the form shown in Fig. 2, and which are so shaped as, when folded on the line a b, and stitched together at the opposite edge, to form each leg with but one seam, and on the outer side of the leg, thereby avoiding the usual seams on the inner sides of the legs, and rendering the overalls stronger and more durable. 0 represents the front portion of the waistband, and U the back portion. D represents an elastic band, which is drawn through the seam in the back portion 0 of the waistband, and is of the proper length to allow its ends there of to project beyond the end of the band C, as shown at E, Figffl. F F are short straps or bands, which are attached at each end to the front portion (J of the waistband near its ends, as shown in Fig. 1. ir Gr represent a series of buckles or metal loops, which are attached to the respective bands F F at equal distances each from the other. H H represent suitable buckles, which are attached to the ends of the band I), and are each provided with a hook, (I, so arranged as to take into the loops G G of the bands F F, as shown in Fig. 1.
The arrangement of these parts is such that the waistband can be readily adjusted, so as to fit the waist of different-sized persons, by simply changing the hooks from one loop to another.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the parts 0 C of the waistband, provided with the straps F F and adjustable loops G G, 01 the elastic band 1) and buckles H H, provided with the backs (I, to take into the loops G G, respectively, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The foregoing specification signed by me this 11th day of June, A. D. 1877.
SAMUEL KAUFFMANN.
