Description
LR. CALDWELL & J. W. HERREN,
PLOWS.
Patented Sept 4,1877,
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS NJHERS. PHOTD'LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON u c UNITED Snares JOHN R. CALDWELL AND JAMES W. HERBEN, OF DADEVILLE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 194,891, dated September 4, 1877 application filed March 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN R. CALDWELL and JAMES W. HERREN, both of Dadeville, in the county of Tallapoosa and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations, showing opposite sides. Fig. 3 is a perspective view. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the share.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention relates to certain improve ments in the frames of plows or cultivators; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts forming the frame, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A is the tongue or beam, the rear end of which is curved and perforated to admit of the insertion of a bolt, a. B B is a piece of iron, consisting of a straight arm, 13, and curved arm B, united at their lower end, so as ,to form the slotted shoe b. The straight arm B has two series of holes, 0 d, one above the other, but each set or series of perforations forming an are having the bolt 6, on which the piece B B swings, forits center. 0 O are the handles, which are pivoted to the beam A at f, and adjustablein their relation to said beam and to the shoe-piece B B by means of the downward-projecting converging arms D D, the lower ends of which are perforated, so that by means of a bolt and nut, g, they may be adjusted in any of the upper set of perforations c in the straight arm B of the shoe-piece. Similarly, by swinging the shoe-piece B B on its pivot e, the bolt on may be inserted in any one of the holes of the lower set of segmentally-arranged perforations (1, so as to secure the shoe in any given angle or position.
The upper face of the slotted shoe b has a series of notches, h, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 3. Into these fit the flange or catch i of the share E, which is further kept in place by a screw-bolt, is, affixed upon its under side, (see Fig. 5,) and projecting down through the slot in the shoe 1) and nut It. By loosening the nut the share may be moved up or down on the shoe from notch to notch, and secured in any given position simply by tightening nut it, while by removing this nut altogether the share may be removed and a share or blade of a different shape substituted without in the least disarranging the other elements of the plow.
From the foregoing description the operation of our improved plow or cultivator frame will be readily understood.
By withdrawing bolts a and g, the shoepiece B B may be swung upon its pivots until the proper pitch has been attained, when it is firmly secured in its position by re-inserting the bolts in the corresponding holes and affixing the nuts.
The depth of furrow may be regulated by adjusting the share E upon shoe 1) in the manner described, shares of different kinds and shapes being affixed upon the shoe according to the character of the work to be done.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the curved beam A, pivoted and adjustable shoepiece B B b, pivoted handles (J, and braces D, adjustable upon the shoe-piece B, all arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. CALDWELL. JAMES W. HERREN.
