IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [92,983, dated July 10, 1877 application :filed April 25, 1877.
To all whom z' trmay concern:
Be it known that LERWIN G. GOLLNER,
of the city, county, and State of New York,
ing-boxes which are constructed with flat backs and sides and segmental fronts, and are provided with hinged flanged covers, whereby such boxes can be packed together in a circular package for transportation.
My invention consists in a box of quadrant I form, having its top flat side hinged, and having a curved flange, whose broad ends are attached to the flat sides to strengthen the structure, and at the same time to retain the contents of the'boxes from accidental displacement, the said hinged cover being curved or cut away to fit closely against the inner edge of the curved flange, all of which will be fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents'a crosssection of my improved box, the lid being closed. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section when the lid is raised. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 5 illustrates the manner of packing the boxes for transportation.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the quadrantshaped body of the box, the front and bottom parts of which merge together in the form of a segment, as at B. G is the fiat back, and D is the fiat top, which is hinged to the body as at a. D D represent the two flat sides, cross section a quadrant-shaped figure.
When the lid D is raised, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it is flush with the back 0, and it is provided with an opening, I), by which it can be suspended on a wall or other place from the whole forming in an ordinary picture-nail, and thereby produce a neat wall-pocket. From the front portion of the segmental front part of the box projects inwardly a flange, D, which is curved from the center outwardly, terminating at each end in broad portions, which are attached to the flat sides D D of the box, whereby the entire structure is greatly strengthened, such flange to a great extent preventing the flat sides from being crushed out, and, moreover, such flange projecting'inwardly prevents the accidental displacement of the articles, such as collars, &c., contained in the box.
The free edge or front end of the flat cover is curved or cut away, to conform to the shape of the curved front of the flange, so that when the lid is closed it fitsclosely against the inner curved edge of the flange, and lies perfectly flush with the same.
A series of boxes constructed as described can be-placed in a package of circular shape, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the same can be conveniently transported, and a great utilization of space is obtained.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a packingbox, A, of quadrantal form, having one of its flat sides, D, hinged at a, and provided with the curved flange D, attached at its broad ends to the sides D D to strengthen the structure and retain the contents, the cover D being curved or cut away to fit closely against the edge of said flange, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of April, 1877.
