IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 April 9,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. SLOGUM33, of Edwards Depot, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a device for locking the ties of cotton and other bales, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective, and Figs. 2, 3, and at detached portions, of my device.

In the figures, A represents a metallic box, which is provided with a bridge piece, D. This box is made deep enough to hold two or three thicknesses of the metallic bands or straps which surround the bale.

One end of the band B has its end bent over the bridge-piece D and passed under it and through the end of the box, over which 7 92,297, dated June 19, 1877 application filed the bridge is formed. The other end of the band is cut away, as seen, from w to w, to form notches as represented. Within the box and upon its sides are formed V-shaped projections a a. When the notched end of the band is passed into the box and is dropped so that the notches catch under the projections a. a, it is held firmly in place.

As there are a number of these notches upon the end of the band, it will be seen that as the bale is tightened up or made smaller by the press the band will be slipped through the box and caught at any desired point.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The box A, consisting of a bottom, two side flanges, having interior projections a a, and an elevated bridge-piece, D, between the flanges, forming an opening underneath for the free passage of the notched band 0, all constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
