ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMER Filed Dec. 29, 1956 :Snventor' E MM Gttorneg Patented Aug. 15, 1933 i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMER Gaspar Leiva, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Application December 29, 1930 Y Serial No. 505,407
3 Claims.
Another object of this invention is to providev a transformer having an iron core and provided with means for supplying moisture to the windings to effect an increase in the electrical induction. l
With these and other objects in View which may be incident to my improvements, the invention consists in the parts and combinations to be hereinafter set forth `and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements comprising my invention may be varied in construction, proportions and arrangement, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
A transformer constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises an iron core surrounded by a container for Water; the outer surface of the container is apertured and the apertures are provided with wicks for supplying mois` ture to the windings of the transformer.
In order to make my invention more'clearly understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawing means for carrying the same into practheir useful applications to the particular construction, which for the purpose of explanation have been made the subject of illustration.
In the drawing:
The single figure is a sectional view of a transformer constructed according to this invention.
As illustrated in the drawing, the transformer made in accordance with this invention comprises a tube of insulating material provided with end flanges to form a spool to receive the primary and secondary windings of the transformer. In the figure of the drawing, one of the windings 47 is shown provided with taps 50, 51, 52 and 53, and the other winding 49 is provided with taps 55, 56, 57 and 58.
Positioned within the tube 45 is a metallic receptacle 71. Tube 45 and receptacle 71 are closed at one end and open at the other. The open end is provided with a screw-threaded cover 72 adapted to be retained in position by threads formed on the interior of the end of tube 45.
An iron core 46 extends axially through tube 45 and projects through the closed end thereof andthe closure cap 72.
tical effect, without limiting the improvements in (Cl. 17E-356) In order to increase the inductive effect of the transformer, the cylindrical surfaces of the tube 45 and receptacle 71 are provided With registering apertures in which are positioned wicks 73. Withv this structure distilled water supplied to the recep- 60v tacle 7l will pass through the felt plugs or wicks 73 and since the wicks are in contact with the `primary Winding 47 the latter will be dampened and theinductive effect ofthe transformer materially increased. 65
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth, by Way of illustration. It is apparent that many changes V and variations maybe made therein by those skilled in thel art, Without departing `from the spirit of the invention or'exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention: K 75 1. A transformer comprising a tube, primary and secondary windings on the exterior of the tube, a metallic core in the tube, means for maintaining distilled water inthe tube, and means for feeding water from the interior of the tube to the windings.
2. A transformer comprising a tube, primary and secondary windings Aon the exterior of the tube, a metallic core in the tube, means for maintaining distilled water in the tube, the tube having a plurality of apertures in the wall thereof, and wick means in the apertures for feeding water from the tube to the windings.
3. A transformer lcomprising a tube having end anges 'extending laterally therefrom in the form of a spool, one end of said tube being closed and a removable closure for the other end, a primary winding on the exterior of said tube between the end flanges, a secondary Winding surrounding the exterior of the primary winding, a metallic core extending axially through the ends of said tube, said tube `being adapted to contain distilled water and having a plurality of apertures in the wall` thereof and a plurality of porous plugs extending through the apertures into lcontactl with the pril mary winding to convey moisture thereto and increase the inductive effect.
