SPARK-PLUG.
Application filed January 31, 1920. Serial No.
which theetellowrngi's a specification.
With the present low grade of fuel for hydrocarbon engines, it has been very difiicult, if'not impossible, to keep the spark plugs from fouling and short circuiting, due to the accumulation of carbon and oil in the exposed portion of the mica insulation surrounding the center electrode. It has also been very'difiicu'lt, owing to ex'cessive heat conditions to' keep the said mica insulation from breaking up or, disintegrating, especially when the spark plugs are used in engines of high compression. The object of my invention is to provide means for propossible,-the inner exposed mlca insulation from direct contact with the combusted gases and the materials which would insulation.
he means which I have found suitable for accomplishing the above results is a bafiie plate of. peculiar form located at they required point in the spark plug chamber,
from the reduced inner end .of the'center electrode and dividing the spark plug cham bar into inner and outer compartments connected by a restricted passage. I A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the in s, in whichigure 1 represents partly inside eleva-- t1on and partly in longitudinal central section a spark lug embodying my invention. 2 is an inner end view'ofthe spark plu 'l lle sleeve,1 is shown as screwed into the outer end ofthe shell2. arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my in; vention; hence I do not intend to limit my self to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. In a mica spark plug, a shell, a battle plate dividing the spark plug chamber into inner and outer compartments connected by a restricted passage, and a center electrode having a mica covering projecting into the inner compartment, said baffle plate being constructed to prevent a too rapid radiation of the heat from the baflle plate to the shell, for keeping the exposed portionof the mica covering sufficiently hot without submitting it to the deleterious eifects of direct contact with the hot combusted gases and oil.
2. In a mica spark plug, a shell, a baflie plate formed integral with the shell and dividing the spark plug chamber into inner and outer compartments connected by a restricted passage, and a center electrode having a mica covering projecting into the inner compartment, said bafile plate being constructed to prevent a too rapid radiation of the heat'from the baflieplate to the shell, for keeping the exposed portion of the mica covering sufiiciently hot without submitting it to the deleterious effects of direct contact with the hot combusted gases and oil.
3. In a mica spark'plug, a shell, a baflie plate dividing the'spark plug chamber into inner and outer compartments connected by a restricted passage, and a center electrode having a mica covering projecting into the inner compartment, said baffle plate having a thinner portion to prevent a too rapid radiation of heat from the baflie plate to the shell, for keeping the exposed portion of the mica insulation sufliciently hot without submitting it to the deleterious efiects of direct colntact with the hot combusted gases and 01 V 4. In a mica spark plug, a shell, a baffle plate formed integral with the shell and dividing the spark plug chamber into inner and outer compartments connected by a restricted passage, and a center electrode having a mica covering projecting into the inner compartment, said baffle plate having a thinner portion to prevent a too rapid radiation of heat from the baflie plate to the shell, for keeping the exposed portion of the mica insulation sufliciently hot without submitting it to the deleterious effects of direct contact with the hot combusted gases and oil.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this twenty-fourth day of January, 1920.
I GEORGE MARGOLIN.
