Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ENOOH K. THOMAS, OF ST LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT m sw mes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,097, dated J une 19, 1877; application filed January 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENocH K. THOMAS, of St. Louis,Missouri, haveinventedan Improvement in Swings, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists in providing the swinging bars of a swing with cord and a pulley and lever, so that the swing may be operated by the person seated in the swing.
D is a lever, bent almost in the form of a semicircle, with two books, one at each end, and working on a pin for a fulcrum at the center. This fulcrum is on the end of an upright on the cross-bar 0. At the other" and lower end of this upright on cross-bar O, and
underneath it, is a pulley, over which runs the cord F, which is attached to the endof the lever D. Over the other end of the lever D is passed the cord H, each end of which is fastened to the swinging bars P P. These swinging bars work on a hinge on the under part of the cross-bar O, and support the basket or seat A of the swing. M M are iron sockets to receive the legs B B, and are made fast to the end or sides of the crossbar and are provided with two pins, one passing through the swing easy to ship or set the upper end of the leg B, and the other over V the outside of the upper end of'the leg B, so that when the upper pin.is removed the leg B will double in close to theleg B, thus making away, and occupy less room.
Now, when the person swingingtakes hold of the cord or rope F and pulls it, it will draw the lever D down and elevate the other end of it, and cause the cord H to pull the swingbars P P forward and set the swing in motion, and thus the operation may be repeated until the swing is in full motion. 1
Now, whatI claim, and for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States to be granted to me, is-
The lever D, operated by the cord F running over the pulley E, with the connecting-cord H attached to the swinging bars P P, substantially as above described, and for the purposes set forth.
' nnoon K. THOMAS. Witnesses:
