The present invention provides for the crossbar at the head of the mattress being in the form of a roller, rotatably mounted 5 on the mattress frame to enable the webbing to be tensioned as desired, means being provided to enable the roller to be turned as required, while means are also provided for securing the roller against the pull of the webbing.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in conjunction with which it will be more particularly described,

Fig. 2 a part elevation thereof, while Figs. 3 and 4 are part sectional elevations and Fig. 5 a part elevation, showing various means which can be employed to secure the roller against rotation.

The crossbar at the head of the mattress comprises a roller 1 with a flat side 2, and a batten 2 having the form of'a segment of a circle in cross section and when in position on the flat side 2 of the roller said batten 2 completes the circular form of the roller 1, and is attached to the latter by screws, an end of the webbing 6 being gripped between the roller 1 and the batten 2. Thrust members 3 attached to the side members 4 of the mattress frame are made hollow at 8 to receive the roller 1 and hold same against the pull of the Webbing 6,

which is secured at its other end to the foot of the frame by any approved means.

To enable the roller 1 to be turned, it can have inserted therein at one or both ends, a flat plate 5 secured by screws 5 and the slotted end 7 of which projects from the roller 1, so that by gripping the end 7 by any suitable tool or by using a bar or rod in said slotted end 7, the roller 1 can be turned against the thrust members 3 to tighten the webbing 6, by winding same on to the roller.

After the webbing 6 has been tightened as required, theroller 1 is held from turning back by belts or pins 8 (Fig. 3), passed through holes 9 in the roller 1, and holes 10 in the lower cross member 11 of the mattress frame. The holes 9 and 10 are provided at desired intervals throughout the length of the roller 1 and member 11, and in tightening the webbing 6 the roller 1 is turned until the holes 9 register with holes 10, following which the bolts or pins 8 are inserted in the registering holes.

Alternative means for securing the roller 1 against the pull of the webbing 6 consist of short pieces 12 of rope or wire (Fig. 1) passing around and attached at one end to the roller 1 and having their other ends attached to eyebolts 13 adjustable through fixed plates 1% by nuts 15, or said roller 1 r can be fitted at one or both ends with a ratchet wheel 16, (Fig. 5) with which engages a pawl 17 pivoted to any suitable part of the frame.

What I do claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States of America is 1. A wire mattress, comprising a webbing, a frame for said webbing, a roller rotatably mounted on one end of said frame, to which roller said webbing is attached, a rope secured to and passing around said roller, a plate attached to and extending from the under side of said frame adjacent said roller, and an eyebolt extending through said plate and attached by its eye to the said rope and means on said belt for moving it transversely of the said plate, thereby tautening said webbing.

2. In a mattress construction having a frame and webbing, a roller rotatably mounted on one end of said frame to which roller said webbing is attached, a rope secured to and passing around said roller, a plate attached to and extending from the under side of said frame adjacent said roller, and an. eyebolt extending through said plate and attached by its eye to the said rope and means on said belt for moving 1t transversely of the said plate, thereby tautening said webbing.
