FAN ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES Filed Dec. 14, 1931 hoe/.2 20]" Patented July 25, 1933 DAVIDIIS'CHBEIN, onmmnnaroms, Minna sown FAN ATTACHMENT roe SEWING MACHINES f Application fiieanecember'm; 1931'. Sefi'aliNoIfiSOQBGS. v 1
- My present invention has for its object the provision of an extremely simple and highly efficient fan attachment for sewing machines, the purpose of which is to create a current ofai'r to cool the operator of the machine.
To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of de- Vices hereinafter-described and defined in the claims. 1 I- In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
" Referring to the drawing: 1 p "Fig. lis an outer face view of the fan attachment applied to thehand wheel of a sewing machine; Fig. 2 isa view partly in elevation and partly in section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, on an-enlarged scale; and I Fig. 3 is an inner face view of'the secondary clamping rim removed from'the' fan attachment. v
' For the purpose of showing the invention applied in working position there is frag; mentarily illustrated in the drawing'a sewthe parts thereof it is head 4:, the main shaft over which runs a belt source of power, and a ing machine and of important to note the 5, having a pulley 6 7 from any suitable hand or flywheel 8 which is integral with said pulley.
The improved fan attachment comprises an outer rim 9, an inner main clamping rim 10, fan blades 11, which afford oblique braces that connect said two rims, and a secondary segmental clamping rim 12. The outer rim 9 and main clamping rim 10 are continuous and unbroken throughout their entire circumference and said outer rim is concavoconvex in cross-section with the channel in its back. It will be noted that the fan blades 11 are integral with the outer edge of the main clamping rim 10 and the outer end portions of said blades are tightly fitted in the channeled back of the outer rim 9 to connect said outer rim thereto. If the frictional contact between the outer rim 9 and the fan blades 11 is not sufficient to hold said rim for rotation with the fan blades 11 the same may be connected by solder or otherwise. Both clamping rims '10 and'12' are axially'aligned' and their opposing faces are channeled to receive the hand wheel 8 therebetween, which' is round or substantially round in cross-sectiomfor selfcentering e'ngagement-therewith. 1 4 V The main clamping rim 1O is'app'li'cable to theouter side of the rim of the hand wheel' 8 by an axial movementjoverthe pulley 6 and the segmental secondaryclamping rim 12,
which-is more than a halfa circle, is applicable over the boss on the head 4 through which the shaft 5-exten'ds by, a radial move ment and onto the respective side of the rim' of the hand wheel 'S'by an axial movement.- A flange 13 is formed 'withtheinner'e'dge of the main clamping rim 10 and a similar fiange'l is formed with the inner edgejof; thesecondary clamping rim 12. The two flanges 13 and 14, which are substantially parallel, are connected, 'asshown, by three screw bolts 15 which extend through aligned holes in said flanges at circumferentially spaced points substantially equidistant apart. Obviously, by tightening the screw bolts 15 the two flanges 13 and "l lwill be drawn toward each other and'frictionally clamp the rims 10 and 12 onto the sides of the rim of the hand wheel 8 with a self-centering action due to the concave sides of said rims and the convex sides of the rim of the hand wheel 8. This fastening means rigidly secures the fan attachment to the hand wheel 8 for rotation therewith.
The outer rim 9 and the secondary clamping rim 12 are each formed from a single sheet of metal and the main clamping rim EAR 10 and fan blades 11 are also formed from a single sheet of metal, thus making a construction that is extremely simple and of comparatively small cost to manufacture.
The fan attachment may be very quickly applied to the hand wheel of a sewing machine without removing or changing any of the parts thereof and its outer rim 9 takes the place of the .rim of the wheel 8 which, as is wellknown, is used almost continuously by the operator in slowing up or stopping the machine. The face of the rim 9 is smooth and unbroken so that there is'no danger of injury to the operators hand which is in contact with said rim. The fan blades 11, two
clamping rims 10 and 12, as well as the screw bolts 15 are entirely within the field 5 of the outer rim 9 so that there are no projecting parts on which the operator would be liable to be hurt or injured- The clamping rims 10, and 12 and the screw bolts 15 securely hold the fan attachment on the wheel 8 so that there is no danger of the same loosening up during the rotation of the hand wheel 8.
What I claim is:
1. A fan of the class described, comprising an outer rim, a main clamping rim, a secondary clamping rim, fan blades connecting the outer rim and the main clamping rim, said two clamping rims being axially aligned, the opposing sides. of the two clamping rims being channeled toreceive the rim of a rotatable wheel therebetween for self-centering engagement therewith, and fastening means connecting the two clamping rims transversely of the wheel and operable to draw the same onto the rim of the wheel.
2. A fan of the class described, comprising an outer rim, a main inner clamping rim, a secondary segmental clamping rim, said two clamping rims being axially aligned, the opposing sides of the clamping rims being channeled to receive the rim of the rotatable wheel therebetween for self-centering engagement therewith, said clamping rims having on their inner-edges a pair of flanges that are substantially parallel, and screw-acting means connecting the two flanges transversely of the! wheel for drawing the two clamping flanges toward each other and for clamping the same onto the of the wheel.
a I 3. The structure defined in claim2in which the back of the outer rim is channeled, and which the fan blades are integral with the main clamping rim and their outer end portions fitted in the channeled back of the outer rim to secure the outer rim thereto.
