Description

S. STORCH July 25, 1933.
COMPACT Filed. Jan. 6, 1933 fiamua/ Smh INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented July 25, 1933 SAMUEL STORGH, OF BRQOKLYN, NEW YORK coMPAc'r- Application filed January 8, 1933. Serial No. 650,469.
My invention relates tocompacts to contain face powders and has reference particularly to improvements in the specific construction of the hinged cover or lid for the 5 article. 7
This invention has for its object to provide a compact of this character, which is extremely IIIGXPGIlSiVG to marmfactnre, and which is not alone attractive in appearance m but of great utility and durability in use.
A further object of'this invention is to provide acover for the article, which cover comprises a foundation of a single piece of sheet material provided with a tab at its edge ca- 13 pable of being turned about upon itself to form a bearing, the latter being arranged to receive a pin carried by the body of the compact and to swing about the pin to open and close the cover.
A still further object of the invent-ion to alford the cover element with facilities to accommodate a removable transparent crystal and a photograph or picture visible througl'i the crystal, which consists preferably of celluloid or other unbreakable substances suitable for the purpose.
I accomplish these objects by means of the device hereinafter described, set forth in the appended claims and illustratively eXemplifled in the accompanying drawing, in which, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved compact showing the cover in its raised position; Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device; Figure 3 is a substantially transverse sectional view taken on lines 3-3 of Figure 2; Figure l is an elevational view of a portion of the container and cover, as viewed from the inside, to illustrate the hinge connection between the two members; and Figure 5 is a substantially transverse sectional view ofthe cover in a slightly modified form.
Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes the bottom section and 11 the upper or top sec- "3 tion of the body or receptacle of. the compact. The contour of the sections may be circular or polysided, the latter shape being used for illustrative purposes. The bottom and top sections are preferably of celluloid and provided with marginal flanges, the
flange ofthe bottom being the smaller nests within the flange of the top section, as shown in Figure 3. In the course of manufactin'e the contacting sides of the flanges are provided with an adhesive which insures a permanent connection between the two sections. The top. section 11 is provided with arelajtively large center opening 12 which is defined by a depending flange 13 and lateral ring 14: to form aseat for a cover, as here r discribcd. The bottom and top sections it) and 11 are curved outwardly from the line of their marginal flanges to provide am space for powder within the body when he sections are assembled.
then that at the circular line where the flange 13 turns inwardlv rom the face of the top section there is iormed a relatively sharp angle and at one point in this angle the latter is deorcssed to form a notch 15, the end walls of which are providci'l with openi 16 aimed with each other to receive a s aight pin 17, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The pin 17 is utilized as a hingepin for a cover 18, the construction ofwhich forms the essential feature of this invention.
The cover 18 comprises a circular foundation plate 19 of thin sheet metal, which may t follows be shaped up slightly convex, as illustrated in Figure 5, or perfectly flat, as shown in Figure 3. At one point aboutits periphery the plate is provided with an integral tab or projection which is turned about upon itself to form a cylindrical bearing 20 of a width corresponding to the width of the notch 15 so as to enable it to swing freely about in the latter using the hinge pin 17 as an axle. Diametrically opposite to the bearing 20, the periphery of the plate 19 is'providedwith a second projection or lip 21 adapted to seat in a. depression 22 in the angle of the top section 11, the lip being utilized as a means to engage and lift the cover to its open position.
The plate'19 receives a layer 23 of celluloid or other suitable covering material, which extends entirely over the upper or outside face of the plate and then turns downwardly to form a skirt or flange 24 adapted to engage in the seat formed by the lateral flange or rim 14 in the cover opening. A circular mirror is placed against the under or inside face of the plate 19 and the flange 2 1 is turned inwardly upon itself to form a bezel or head embracing the side and margin of the mirrorto hold the same in place. It will be under-- stood that the celluloid covering is placed upon the plate 19 and the mirror inserted before the tab is formed into the bearing 20.. To accommodate the bearing tab and lip 21 slits are provided in the covering.
Referring particularly to the construction illustratively exempliliedin Figures 2 and 3,. the covering material or layer 23 is shaped up into an upstanding flange or bezel 26'- extending marginally about the cover. The bezel 26 accommodates a circular crystal 27 either as apermanent member or as a re movable element. able crystal 27 is to enable the compacts to be subsequently provided with a suitable print or photograph 28, which may be placed upon the cover within the bezel 26 and the crystal cemented in position over the print; It is proposed that the latter construction will enable a purchaser to provide the retailer with a photograph or print which he may mount, as above described.
' Having described my invention and the manner in which the same may be used, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is:
1. In a compact of the character described, the combination of a receptacle, comprlsmg a bottom section and a. top section, the latter having a flanged opening to give access to the interior of the receptacle, the meeting line of the top surface and flange forming an The purpose of the remov release :angle in which a depression is provided, a cover for the opening having a foundation plate provided with an integral projection bent over upon itself to form a hinge strap adapted to be received in the depression, and .a hinge pin carried by the top section and prOJected across the depression and through the hinge strap, 5 c
2. A compact, as claimed in claim 1, in which the angle in the top section is provided with a second depression and the foundation plate has an integral lip at its edge to be received in the second depression when the cover is in closed position.
3. A compact, as claimed in claim 1 includ- I ing a covering applied to the foundation plate, said coveringbeing projected from the side of the plate to form a bezel adapted to fit the flanged wall of the opening.
1. A compact, as claimed in claim 1, including a covering applied to the foundation plate and projected from the sidethereof to form a bezel, and a crystal inserted in the bezel and over the face of the plate.
5. A compact, as claimed in claim 1, including a covering applied to the foundation plate, said covering being projected above and below the plate to form a side wall to ht the flanged wall of the opening, the side wall of the cover being further turned back upon itself on opposite faces of the plate to form two bezels, a mirror retained against the plate by the under bezel, and a crystal retained by the bezel on the outer face of the cover,
SAMUEL STORCH.
