UNITED STATES ANNA S. TURNQUIS'E, 0F IVL'INNEAPOLIS, MENNESGTA.
VANITY CASE.
Application filed MEtIiil 8, 1923. Serial No. 623,614.
T 0 all 101 mm may concern Be it known that I, ANNA S. TUBNQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vanity cases, and an object is to provide a receptacle in which face powder and a powder puff may be conveniently carried without liability of the powder being spilled. Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be carried in a hand bag or purse by persons of the female sex who are particular about their appearance, the device being so constructed that the application of the powder without spilling the same is easily accomplished by the possessor at any place whenever desired. Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be readily and economically manufactured from sheet material.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description and the novel features of my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention,-Fig. 1 is a view in vertical central section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section on the line 88 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the interior cover removed.
As shown in the drawings, I provide a boxlike member having a bottom 10 which has an upwardly curved annular portion 12 at its periphery, this annular portion at its outer edge being bent upwardly to form a vertical wall 13, which is provided with a horizontal flange or offset 14 about midway of its top and bottom. The upper end of this vertical wall is bent backwardly'on itself and the lower end of the bent back portion is turned inwardly to provide an annular horizontal flange 16 which lies in suhstantially the same horizontal plane as the flange 14. Attached by a hinge 18 to the flange 16 is an interior cover having a horizontal rim 20 from the inner margin of which depends a vertical ringlike member 22 which at its lower edge turns inwardly in a horizontal plane to form a disklike member 24 which is provided with a multiplicity of perforations 26. If desired, a disk 28 having a multiplicity of perforations 30 may be attached to the underside of the disk 24 by a central rivet 32. It will be understood that the disk 28 is not absolutely essential. The disk 28 when used may be turned on the rivet 32 to bring the perforations 30 into and out of register with the perforations 26 by means of an attached lug 34 which extends up wardly through an arcuate slot 36 in the disk 24. The margin of the interior cover diametrically opposite the hinge 18 is provided with a projection 38 by means of which the cover may be lifted and it will be observed that on account of this cover being depressed within the surrounding flange or rim 20 a pocket is provided for receiving a powder puff P. Attached by a hinge 40 to the vertt cal wall 13 is an exterior cover 42, the inner surface of which is slightly raised to form a shallow recess for receiving a mirror 44. The margin of the cover has a. downwardly extending ringlike portion 46 which when the cover is closed engages the offset or flange 14, thereby making a tight closure which prevents escape of the powder.
The operation and advantages of my device will now be readily understood. The vanity case is constructed in the form of a small receptacle adapted to contain face powder and a powder pufi and can be readily carried in a hand bag or purse. When the receptacle is to be filled, both covers are lifted and the proper amount of face powder is placed in the bottom portion of the receptacle. On closing the interior cover which has the powder pufi contained in the pocket in its upper side and turning the case bottom side up, a small amount of powder will be delivered to the lower side of the powder puff. l/Vhenever it is desired to shut off the supply of powder, the disk 28 is turned to bring its perforations out of register with the perforations in the disk 24. The pro vision of the bottom of the case with the upwardly curved annular portion 12 causes the powder to gravitate toward the center underneath the perforated disk when the case is in upright position so that when the case is turned over, some of the powder will be delivered to the puff even if the case is nearly empty. The case can be readily and economically stamped from sheet material, the body of the case being in one piece, is made by a single stamping operation. The in terior and exterior covers may also each be made by a single stamping operation.
I claim:
A vanity case comprising a boxlike mem- 5 her having a bottom provided with a central flat portion and an upwardly curved annular portion at its periphery and having a vertical Wall formed by bending upwardly the outer edge of said annular portion, an
interior cover provided With perforations and hinged to said boXlike member, said in terior cover being centrally depressed to form a pocket for a powder pull, and an exterior cover hinged to said boxlike member in spaced relation above said interior cover.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
