This invention relates to scraping devices of the sort having a blade provided with a scraping edge adapted to be drawn alongor over surfaces of articles. to be cleaned or smoothed. As instances of uses to which the device of the present invention maybe applied,.reference may be had tothe smoothing of floors or the like and the removal of paint etcetera from articles of various kinds.
.v The aim of tie invention istoL provide an improved scraper which has an effective scraping action, chattering or jumping of the tool being largely eliminated; which is very compact in construction and arrangement 415 and neat in appearance; which is simple in construction andrcheap to manufacture, it comprising a relatively few number of parts each of which may be economically made; and which is very convenient in use.
Other objects will bein part obvious, and in partjpointed out more in detail hereinafter.
Ilfhe invention accordingly7 consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will y -25 be exemplified in the construction 'hereinafter set forth and the scope of the applican tion of which will be indicated in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing in detaih'lO designates a handle of suitable vkind provided with a shank 11to which is secured for angular adjustment a body or frame member 12. The frame member may be connected tothe handle portionpin any suitable manner, as by means of a screw 13 and a wing nutlfl. The forward end of the frame member is forked, so as to provide a pair of arms 15, the forward ends of which are beveled, as
at 16, so as to form rests against which the bottom of the clamping plate 17 is adapted to '1.50, engage. These arms have alined openings lin the arms .nailed onthe pin.f The bottom plate 17 is engages.

The clamping plate 17 has a pairof -de pending webs or ears 2O in straddling relation to the arms 15, and the upper plate 19 has a depending ear or lug 21 which extends down into the fspace between the arms 15. The ears 2() are provided with openings 20 one of which is threaded, andthe lug 21 is provided with an opening 21. The bottom plate is provided.- with an opening 22 through which the lug 21 extends, there being sufficient clearance'between the lug and the edgel in the form of a pin 23 which extends through the alined openings 15', and 21. By preference, one end of this pinis provided with a thread 24 which is adapted to be received by the complementary thread of the opening 20. The pin, of course, is journalled 15 and the upper plate is jourprovided with shoulders 26 adapted to engage the rests 16 of the frame member.
Secured to the upper clamping plate, preferably intermediate its ends, is a handle or knob 30 against which pressure may be exerted to force the scraper against the surface to be cleaned or smoothed.l Theforward ends or jaws of the clamping plates are adapted to be forced towards each other and against the interposed scraper blade by a screw 31 rotatably mounted in a threaded opening 32 adjacent the rear end of thel upper plate. The lower-end of this scr-ew engages the upper surface of the bottom plate adjacent j the rear end of the latter. Bypreference,the
bottom plate has a groove 33 vagainst the bottom of which the lower end ofthe screw The side walls of this groove prevent lateral movement of a screw.
In order to provide a cushion between the blade and the handle 10 and thus allow aV yielding action, there is interposed between blade, designated bythe the frame and the upper clamping plate, adjacent the rear end of the latter, a coiled spring 35. The lower plate 17 has a hole 36 for accommodating the spring. On the under surface of the upper plate, is a centering stud 37, and on the upper face of the frame rearwardly of the pivot pin 23 is the centering stud 38. The opposite endsof the spring encircle these studs so that the spring is held in place. Y
When using my improved device, the blade is drawn over the surface to be cleaned, with one hand gripping and drawing the handle l() and the other hand bearing down on the knob 30. Due to the cushion provided by the spring 35, the blade holder comprisingthe clamping jaws may pivot about the axis of the pin 23, the yielding action being such as to prevent, or at least reduce, chattering of the tool and marring of the surface to be dressed.
It is observed that my improved tool is characterized by its simplicity in construction, and the ease and facility with which the parts may be assembled. Both ofthe clamping jaws are pivoted to the same pin, which not 'only lends simplicity and cheapness in construction to the device, but also allowsv a compact, neat, and low arrangement.. It is of advantage to interpose the cushion spring between the upper plate vand the frame in that a spring ofl the desired length may be accommdated without unduly increasing the height of the device. The assembly of the parts may be quickly and readily accomplished by merely bringing the clamping plates to position with the spring interposedbetween the frame and the upper plate and theny inserting the piv-ot pin 23 through several alined openings. The scraper blade is clamped between the jaws and the forward ends of the clamping plate by inserting the blade between those jaws while the screw 31 is backedoff, and then turning the screw down against the anvil surface provided on the lower plate.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter kcontained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. v
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described tion which, be said to fall therebetween.
I claim as my invention:
1. A scraper having a frame member with a handle attached thereto, a scraping blade vcent'the rear ends of said plates holder comprising a pair of plates having opposed jaw portions at one end, a scraping blade positioned between said jaw portions, means for pivoting each of said plates to said frame member, and a spring interposed between said frame member and said blade holder rearwardly of said pivot means.
2. A scraper having a frame member with a handle attached thereto, a scraping blade holder comprising a pair of plates one on top of the other and provided at their forward ends with opposed jaw portions, a scraping blade interposed between said jaw porons, single means for pivotally connecting both of said plates to said frame member rearwardly of said jaw portions, means adjafor forcing said jaw portions against said blade, and a spring rearwardly of said pivot means and interposed between said frame member and blade holder.
3. A scraper having a frame member provided with a handle at one end and with a rest at its forward end, a blade holder comprising a pair of superimposed plates each pivotally connected to said frame member rearwardly of said rest, the bottom plate being adapted to engage against said rest, the forward ends of said plates having opposed jaws, a scraping blade interposed between said jaws, a spring interposed between said holder and frame member rearwardly of the pivot therebetween and normally urging said holder against saidrest, and a screw carried by one of said plates adjacent its rear end and engaging the other plate for forcing said jaws in clamping relation to said blade.
4. A scraper having a frame member provided with a handle, a blade holder comprising a pair of superimposed plates having opposed jaws at their forward ends, a single pivot pin for pivotally and independently connecting each of said plates to said frame member, a scraping blade interposed between said jaws, a spring interposed between saidY frame member and holder rearwardly of said pin, and means carried by said plates for forcing said jaws towards each other.
5. A scraper having a frame member provided'with a handle, the forward end of saidV frame member having a pair of arms, a bottom clamping plate having a pair of 'ears straddling said arms, an upper clamping plate having a lug extending loosely through said bottom plate and into the space between said arms, a pivot pin extending through said arms, ears and lug, a blade interposed between the forward ends of said clamping plates, a
spring interposed between said frame member and the blade holder comprising said plates. and means for forcing Vthe forward end of said plates towards each other.
