Description
G. C. PETERS.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29. 1921.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
UNITED STATES GEORGE C. PETERS, OE LOSANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PATENT OFFIQE.
WRENCH.
' Application filed June as,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, Gnonen C. Prirnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to adjustable ratchet wrenches. r
The primary object of the invention resides in the construction of a novel and improved ratchet wrench capable of a multi plicity of uses whereby a stationary frame is adapted to receive a movable yoke and having a. plate designed to accommodate a movable jaw member so as to engage a part to be turned such as a nut or pipe for instance.
Another object of the invention relates to a ratchet wrench affording provision for adjusting a yoke with respect to a stationary frame and plate so as to draw one toward the other to engage a part such as a nut or pipe, including a spring pressed jaw carried by said plate and adapted to engage the said nut or pipe in different positions in order to actuate the same.
Another and very important object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable ratchet wrench of the type above set forth in which the parts are extremely simple in construction, easily assembled, rigid and durable, highly efficient in operation, practical and capable of being manufactured at a very low cost whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced.
With these objects in view and others which will be manifest and suggested as the purpose and nature of my invention are revealed in the following specification and drawing wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment thereof,
Figure 1 is a side view showing the inven tion, and,
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 2 with the front portion of the frame removed, showing the invention when applied for actuating a nut.
Fig. 4: is a sectional View taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary portion of the stationary plate carried by the yoke.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like parts designate correspondingv parts in Specification of Letters Patent. -P2,te11ted Feb. 14, 1922.
a shank 12 disposed within the handle portion'of the wrench and threaded as at 13 for cooperation with a knurled nut 14 which extends outwardly through apertures 15 in the sides 6 and 7 of the frame, as clearly shown by Figs. land 4 of the drawing.
The upper ends of the arms 10, 11 of the yoke terminate in a U-shaped head 16 which is adapted to engage a part such as a nut or pipe for instance, when it is adjusted with respect to the frame above referred to. Between the arms 10, 11, I have also provided a plate 17 secured by suitable fastening elements 19 to the frame 5. The U-shaped portion 16 of the yoke is formed with shoulders 18 which engage the top edge of the arms 6, 7 of the frame to limit the inward movement of the yoke when the nut 14 is rotated. The upper portion of the plate 17 is provided with a slot 20 terminating in a substantially circular recess 21 to receive a movable jaw 22, the upper object engaging portion of the jaw 22 being provided with a sharpened, enlarged extension 28 adapted to engage the part to be turned, as is well understood.- Secured to the triangular shaped'arm 24c formed by the slot 20 is secured a suitable leaf spring 25 normally bearing against the movable jaw 22 thus permitting the same to be oscillated so as to engage the nut or pipe to be actuated when the wrench is being used.
By reason of this construction, it will be readily apparent that as the knurled nut 14 is turned on the threaded shank of the yoke, the yoke will be moved with respect to the said frame since the knurled nut cannot move in the recesses 15 of the frame and thus the head 16 will be drawn into engagement with the part to be turned which will also be in contact with the enlarged portion 23 of the movable jaw above referred to.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention embodied in one form by way of example, and which in practice has been found to be highly satisfactory in obtaining the desired results. It will be obvious however that other embodiments may. be adopted and that various changes'in the details of construction may be resorted to by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven-.
tion. It is furthermore understood that the invention is not necessarily limited or restricted to the precise elements shown except insofar as such limitations are specified in the subject matter being claimed.
Having shown and described my invention, what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the U. S. is
1. A wrench of the class described comprising a U-shaped frame, the sides of said frame being bent inwardly to provide a hand gripping end, a recessed plate attaohedto said frame, means carried by said plate for engaging a part to be actuated, a yoke slidably mounted between the arms of the frame and said plate, and means for adjusting said yoke with respect to the frame.
2. A wrench of'the class described comprising a frame, the sides of said frame having recesses therein and bent inwardly to provide a handle gripping end, a recessed plate attached to one of the sides of the frame, a spring pressed movable jaw seated within said recess of the plate pivotally mounted to engage a part toibe actuated, a yoke positioned between the arms of the frame and having a threaded shank extending within the handle portion thereof, and a knurled nut on said threaded shank extending through the recesses of the arms whereby the yoke may be adjusted with re spect to the frame to engage a part to be actuated.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
GEORGE C. PETERS.
