Description

BQOKMARK Filed D60. 25, 1932 V I e e/ lN'vuNTOR (May WI/J@J X Ti Patented June 13, 1933 PATENT" OFFICE MURRAY WARSHAY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK .IBOOKMABK Application filed'December 23, 1932. Serial No. 648,548.
The present invention relates to book marks an'daims to provide certain improvements therein. More particularly it relates to a ;book mark which is adapted to be either permanently associated with a book or detachably connected thereto and which will at all times indicate the page where the reader last finished reading before closing the book.
The primary object of my invention is toprovide a simple, eflicient, compact and neat book mark which can be easily applied to any book without the aid of tools or supplemental securing means. Another object is to provide a book mark which in use will not interfere with the reading of the printed page orprovide any objectionable or unsightly projections upon the book. Another object is to provide a book mark which can be manufactured and sold at a low price and which may carry advertising matter thereon and thereby'constitute an advertising novelty. Another object is to'provide a book mark which can be detachably secured to any book andjcan therefore be used indefinitely. 25, The foregoing and other objects of my invention which will be apparent from the detailed description which follows I accomplish by employing a stretchable elastic element, for example, an elastic band, which is disposed in oblique relation in proximity to a corner of a book cover over an inside face thereof, the elastic element being extensible inwardly to engage over the pages of the book in proximity to the corners thereof which overlie the corner of the book to which the book showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the book mark shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along the plane of the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fractionalview of the inside ofa book-cover showing a further embodiment of my invention applied thereto.
of the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 6 is a section taken along theplane Referring first to Figs. 1 to i of the draw- I 1 ing, let A indicate an ordinary book having hard or substantially rigid covers B, B and pages C secured or bound within the boolr covers inthe conventional manner. Detach 6 ably secured to a corner of one of thecovers and preferably to the lower right hand corner l of cover B as viewed in Fig. 1 is a book mark comprising a corner member D consisting of in superposed spaced relation and connected together by side walls G providing a triangular pocket between the parts E and F. Preferably the triangular part E is of larger area than the'part F and extends a'substantial distance beyond the edge 7 of said part F, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Outwardly beyondthe edge 7", the part E at its opposite sides is formed with slits e which terminate at their inner ends in small circular openings e and encircling said part E between the openings e is an elastic band H which is positioned upon the part E by being drawn through the slits e.
The corner member D may be formed 0 any desired material, for example, the parts E and'F thereof may be made of cardboard, compressed fibre or other substantially rigid material which may be suitably'covered on either one or both: face'swith fabric, paper, leather or the likeJ so as to give to'the corner pieces a more finished and pleasing" appearance. 'Preferably the pocket in the corner member is of a width to snugly engage. over the corner of an ordinary book cover and if desired the inner surfaces of the parts E and F of said corner member may be treated or coated to increase their frictional or holding engagement upon said cover. If
desired the side walls G may be made of elastwo right triangular parts E and F arranged 65 p elastic band H positioned over the inner face of said cover. When so positioned the elastic band H will be disposed obliquely to the corner of the cover in proximity to said corner and said band will be extensible inwardly with relation to said cover. To render the book mark operative, the elastic band H is extended to engage over the first page of reading matter immediately upon beginning the reading of a book and it will thereupon overlie the lower right hand corner of the first page and all the pages beneath it. When the reading of a page is completed and the page is turned to the left the lower right hand corner of the page will just naturally withdraw from beneath the elastic band and thus place the band in engaging relation over the lower corner of the next page. In reading it is natural preliminary to turning a page to engage the rear of the page at its side edge near the top with the finger and gradually raise the page in the act of turning it, which procedure facilitates the disengagement of the lower edge from beneath the band. It will thus be seen that the elastic 7 to always indicate the last page upon which the reader was engaged in reading before closing the book.
Inthe embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6 the elastic band instead of being carried by a detachable member is carried by a triangular piece of cardboard, fibre or the like K provided with slits hwhich terminate inwardly in small openings k for accommodating the elastic band H in a manner analogous to that in which the band H is held on the corner piece D.
The part K may be glued, cemented or attachedin any other manner to the lower right hand corner of the inner face of a cover B, but in order that the band H when Worn out or broken may be replaced by a new band a portion of the part K is preferably left uncemented to the cover from the edge to a line inwardly from said edge beyond the elastic band 11 as indicated by the dotted line 70 The manner of use of the invention as set forth in this embodiment is substantially the same as that described in the preceding paragraph for the embodiment disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4: except in that the car- 7 rymg or supporting member K is permanently attached to the cover.
It will be apparent that where the concept underlying the present invention is to be applied to a book mark which is to constitute a permanent non-renewable element in a book an elastic band or stretchable element may be secured in oblique relation to the inner face of a book cover in proximity to a corner thereof in any desired manner.
From the foregoing detailed description it tion is susceptible, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the details of construction disclosed since the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is: i V
1. A book mark comprisingan endless elastic band, a support upon which said elastic band is detachably mounted in definiterelation thereto and means for. attaching the support to a book cover to dispose theelastic band obliquely in proximity to a corner of the cover over the inner face thereof with a part of the band disposed between the support and the book cover and apart of the V band in extensible relation to the book cover.
2. A book mark comprising a corner member having a pocket adapted to receive the corner of a book cover and frictionally-hold thereon, the part of the corner member which engages over the inner face of the cover being slittcd inwardly at spaced points, an end- I less elastic band engaging around said part and detachablyheld by the slits therein to dispose a part of the elastic band over said corner member obliquely to the edges of the cover, whereby said band will be extensible to engage over the corn-er of the pages of the book in proximity to the corner of the book cover corner to which the book mark is attached. I 1
In witness wheref, Ihave hereunto signed my name. I V
