Application led .Tune 16,
This invention relates to a door hinge, the general object of the invention being to provide means for adjusting one leaf of a hinge in relation to its barrel, with the other leaf having a plate adjustably connected thereto by an eccentric so that the hinge can be adjusted to adjust a door or the like to properly space the door from the stop strip or to adjust a door which has become warped.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the hinge.
Fig. 2 is a view looking toward the opposite side thereof with parts in section.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal'sectional view through the central part of the hinge.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5`-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a View of the adjusting screw. In these views, the 'numeral 1 indicates one leaf and the numeral 2 the opposite leaf. The leaf 2 is formed with the barrels 3 for receiving the hinge pin 4. Y The leaf 1k has its inner edge enlarged as at 1 and this edge is formed with a recess which extends from the upper end of the leaf downwardly to a point past the center thereof. This recess is formed with a circular part 5 and a slot 5 which eX- tends from the circular part through the edge 40 of the enlargement as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the recess is of substantially key,- hole shape in cross section.
The upper partof the slot has parallel walls, but the lower part has its walls flar-l ing outwardly as shown in Fig. 4. The barrel 3 of this leaf 1 is formed withy a tongueV 6 having a circular enlargement at its free edge and a shank connecting the circular enlargement to the barrel, the shank having parallel side walls. The tongue is adapted 193i. lserial no. 544,835. i1
to be inserted into the recess vfrom the upper end thereof andpushed downWa-rdlynntil its shank enters that paruof the slot which is formed with the flaring-Walls. v As shown in Fig. 4, the circularenlargement of the tongue will lie in the circular' l part of the recess with the shank of the tongue fitting in the slot part of thel recess and when the tongue occupies that partof the recess, the slot part of which is provided I with flaring walls', the tongue can be swung laterally with its circular enlargementacting as a pivot.
A pin 15 is placed in the upper part of the circular portion ofthe recess with its lower 55.l i
end bearing against theupper end of the circular part of the tongue, as shown inF'igs. 2 and 3, to hold the tongue in the recess.
A bushing 7 is threaded in a hole formed inthe enlarged part of the leaf 1 and a screw 70 8 has a reduced end rotatably arranged in the bushing and this screw passes through a threaded hole in the shank of the tongue as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that by turning the screw, the tongue will be moved laterally so as to adjust the leaf 1 kwith respect to its Vbarrel 3.
A plate 9-has screw holes 10 therein and y the leaf 2 has slots 11 therein registering with the holes,I these holes and slots being f adapted to receive the screws which fasten the plate 9 and the leaf 2 to the door frame or to tl e door. An eccentric 12 is arranged in an eccentric opening 13 in the leaf 2 and this eccentric is attached to a screw 14 which 85 passes thru one of the holes 10 inthe plate 9.
Thus by turning the screw 14 the eccentric will be adjusted and this adjustment of the eccentric will adjust the leaf 2, after the screws which fasten the plate 9 and leaf 2 99' to the frame or door are loosened. The Walls i of the eccentric 12 and of opening 13 are beveled as shown ini Fig. 5.
As before stated, these two adjustments of the hinge will provide means whereby doors can be easily and quickly adjusted when they are warped or too close to the stop strip or other parts of the Vdoor frame.
I claim: Y l
A hinge of the class described comprising a pair of leaves, a barrel formed on one leaf, the inner edge of the other leaf having an opening therein extending from a point below the Center of the leaf through the upper end thereof, said opening being formed with an inner part of circular cross sectional shape and an outer part of the form ofa slot, a barrel having atonguev formed with a rounded outer edge fitting in the circular part of the" opening and a narrow shank fitting in the slot part of the opening' and a screw passing through a threaded hole in the shank of they tongue and rotatably supported in the said other leaf for adjustingthe tongue in the slot of said other leaf and a pin passing through the barrels.4v
In'testimonyf whereof I' affix my signature.
