Be it known that I, OSCAR C. Buscar, a
`citizen of the United States, and a vresident Another object 'is to provide hinges that can be vused as right-*hand or left-hand hinges at will.
The invention consists of the features'of construction' and arrangement hereinafter pointed out and claimed, and will be best understood by reference to the annexed drawings and description, which set forth a preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is -a vertical section through the two hinge-members; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through a portion of a doorway and an adjacent door, secured thereto by a pair of my new hinges.
In the drawings, 1 represents the door to which is attached one hinge-plate 2, that carries an offset knuckle 3 with its openbottomed socket.
' 4 is a plug of hardened steel having -a concave seat, and preferably provided with one or more burs 5. This plug 4 has` been driven forcibly into the bottom of the socket in knuckle 3, the burs preventing it from dropping out during shipment.
6 is a ball of hardened steel, positioned in the concave seat of pluo' 4, and held in place as by a spiral spring 8 is the door-facing or jamb, to which is secured the other hinge-plate 9, that carries the offset knuckle 10 having a bore open from end to end and provided with internal screw-threads. The hinge-pivot consists of the cylindrical plug 11, of hardened steel, screw-threaded around its lower portion to engage the internal threads in knuckle 10, and preferably concaved on its other end to receive the ball 6. The lower end of this pivot-plug 11 is transversely split, at 12 and 13, and has an internally-threaded bore into which turns the tapering set-screw 14.

Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen thefaxis-of'th'e hinge-memb'er lies'in substantially lthe imedian plane, indicated -by dotted =-line.16-16, that passes through its fasteningeplfate 2 :(instead 'of being in thel planef'offthe vcrack between the door and the doorway, 'as heretofore); While the axis of the `other hinge-member is so offset as to coincide -with Ithe axis of the first hingemember. By means of this construction and arrangement, the pair-of hinges may be employed, -as iindicated yin Fig. 2, was lefthand hinges le.,1the hinges are at the left of 'the door). To employ ythe `members as right-hand hinges, theplugs v15 and 11 are removed from their hinge-member (the closure-plug 15l being unscrewed as by hand,
then-the set-screw 14 removed, after which the pivot-plug 11 can be entirely withdrawn through the bottom of the knuckle 10), and then said hinge member turned upside down, and the plugs 11 and 15 inserted into proper position. This arrangement brings the parts into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which the hinge-plate 2 may be secured to the right-hand side or edge of the door, and the other member (now represented by the dotted line 9') may lthat i be secured to the right-hand doorfacing,-
thus constituting the pair of right-hand hinges.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the construction and' arrangement of the parts, that the parts may be inverted or transposed, and that some fea.- tures may be used to the exclusion of others,
without in any instance departing from the' spirit of my invention. For instance, instead of havlng a continuous bore through the knuckle 10, there may be one screwthreaded socket at the top and-a separate screwthreaded socket at the bottom (with the yscrew-threaded pivot 11 detachably and adj ustably'seated in either of said sockets) or,the bore may extend entirely through this knuckle, yet be screw-threaded in only a portion. thereof.

claim:
l1. rlhe combination 'of a hinge-member having a socket whose axis lies in substantially the median plane of its fastening. plate, a second hinge-member having a bore whose axis is in that same plane, a detachable pivot adjustably held to protrude from either end of said bore to receive said socket,
and means for locking saidv pivot in place.
2. The combination with a hinge-member -Which has a socket in which is held a ball,
ofa second hinge-member having a bore `open at each end, a detachable pivot protruding adjustably from either end of said bore and adapted to `enter said socket and present its end as a 'bearing vfor said ball, and means for locking said pivot in place in said bore.
3. rlhe combination of a hinge-member having a socket, a second 'hinge-member having a screw-threaded bore open at each end, and a pivot adapted to be screw-threaded 1nto either end of said bore so as to protrude into said socket, the common axis of said socket and pivot being in thevmedian plane of the fastening plate of one of said members. l

5. In a hinge, the combination of a hingemember, which has a single knuckle located midway of its vhinge-plate and provided with a continuous bore therethrough having internal screw threads, a second member having a single knuckle located at the upper end of its hinge-plate and provided with a socket open at itsbottom, of a unitary headless plug screw-threaded onl its lower portion to engage said internal threads and cyindrical on its upper portion where it protrudes into said socket to constitute the hinge-pivot, whereby said pivot can be longitudinally adjusted to any desired extent either upward or downward.
6. A door-hinge, comprising in combination a hinge-member having a knuckle with a socket open at its bottom only, a complementary hinge-member having a knuckle with a continuous bore, a. unitary plug with its lower portion engaging said bore and with its upper end protruding into said socket to constitute an extended pivot-bearing therefor, and means operable from beneath for raising or lowering or for bodily inserting or entirely withdrawing said pivot from the lower end of said bore while the door is in closed position within the doorway.
