This invention relatesin general to an improvement in'hand bags and like articles and particularly to an adjustable su orting member therefor which enables the user to carry the bag in any one of a numberof desired positions. p

The primary object of the invention is to form a flexible supporting construction in combination with a hand bag, pocket book, or similar device, which is readily adaptable to assume various positions thereon as desired by the carrier.

A further provision includes a construc tion of a supporting member or strap which coincides harmoniously with the type of ar ticle to which it is connected for use and which further provides means for fastening portion of the strap intermediate the fixed ends of the same against the side of the article, the free end of the strap when fixed in this position enabling the carrier to firmly grip the same by the hand.

Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable member of suflicient length to enable the user to carry the bag or pocket book suspended evenly from the arm or Wrist when desired. 7

A further object is to provide a supporting member of this type which adds to the utility and serviceableness of the bag and does not detract in any manner from its general pleasing a earance. I

A still further object is the provision of a detachable fastening means intermediate the ends of the supporting member which facilitates readily changing the position of the supporting strap as desired.

My invention further includes other objects and novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more particularly referred to and which will be apparent from the accompanying drawing in which the preferred embodiment of the invention and a modification of the same is illustrated.

Referring particularly to Figures 1 and 3 inclusive of the drawing, a hand bag construction illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown gener ally at 10. The configuration or construction of the bag may be of any shape or novel design, the same being shown in the instant case with a. front flap 11 which is provided with a'suitable clasp or securing means 12. An adjustable supporting member or strap of flexible material coinciding harmoniously with the design of the bag is indicated at 13. The ends of the supporting member 13 are fixed in a desirable manner upon the upper front portion of the bagv as indicated at 14 and also in a substantially opposite position 7 on the rear portion of the bag as indicated at 15. In an extended position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the supporting member is of sufiicient length to enable the user to carry the bag loosely on the arm or wrist. Inasmuch as the fixed ends of the strap are in substantially opposite positions on the respective sides of the bag, the construction facilitates an even suspension of the same from thearm or wrist of the user.

In carrying out the invention the supporting member or strap 13 is adjustable by reason of its flexibility to assume a position adj acent the side of the bag as illustrated in Fig. 8. Referring particularly to Fig. 3, the supporting member when fastened to the bag in this position is sub-divided into a fixed portion 18, located against the side of the bag,

and a free portion 19. In carrying the bag when the strap is fastened in this position the hand of the user grips the free portion 19 of the strap. ()bviously the user may either grip the strap tightly with the back of the hand or support the same by placing the palm of the hand against the bag, the back ofthe hand resting against the strap. It is not desired to limit the invention to the exact type of fastening means shown in the drawing,

it being apparent that equivalent devices can be utilized without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention. The fastening means is readily disassociated so that the position or the strap may be readily changed to accommodate the desires of the user.

Referring particularly to Figs. 4 and 5, a modified form of the hand bag is generally designated at 20. In this form of bag the customary locking mechanism is provided as indicated at 21. As illustrated the fixed ends of a flexible strap 22 are fastened in any deirable manner on the side of the bag as indicated at 28 and 2%. A similar fastening means to thatheretofore described is utilized, the elements of the same being indicated at 25 and 26. lVhen the strap is fastened to the side of the bag as illustrated in Fig. i, the same has a fixed portion 27 against the bag and a free portion 28 by which the user may carry the bag in the manner hereinbefore described in connection with Fig. 3. In this form of the invention the strap as illustrated in Fig. wien extended is sufficiently long to enable the user to support the same on the arm or wrist, but, necessarily the strap is shorter than that shown in the preferred type of the invention inasmuch as the ends of the same must be connected to the same side of the bag.

The inventive concepts herein disclosed may be obviously embodied in other desired forms without departing from the scope and perview of the invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. In hand bags and the like, an adjustable supporting member retained at its ends to the bag, detachable fastening means intermediate the ends for connecting said member and bag whereby the supporting member may be positioned in a plurality of manners to facilitate the carrying of the bag.

2. In hand bags and the like, an adjustable supporting member secured by its end portions to the bag, means intermediate the end portions for detachably connecting said member and bag whereby the supporting member W is positionable to facilitate the carrying of the bag either on the arm or by the hand of the user against the same.

3. In hand bags and the like, an adjustable supporting member, the ends of which are fixed in position on the bag, detachable fastening means located intermediate the fixed ends of said member and connectable to the side of the bag whereby the supporting member may be positioned in a plurality of manners to facilitate the carrying of the bag.

4:. In hand bags and the like, a flexible supporting strap, the ends of which are fixed in position on the bag, detachable fastening means for connecting said strap and bag whereby the strap is positionable to facilitate the carrying of the bag either loosely on the arm or tightly by the hand'of the user against the same. a

5. In hand bags and the like, a flexible supporting strap, the ends of which are fixed in position on opposite sides of the bag, detachable fastening means located intermediate the fixed ends of the strap and connectable to the side of the bag, said strap when dotached being adapted to assume an extended position to facilitate an even suspension of the. bag from the arm of the user.
