N. PETERS. PHOTD-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHXNGTQM D C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGEQ ADDISON BERDAN, OF SALEM, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOPPERS FOR OIL-CANS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,094, dated March 6, 1877; application filed November 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON BERDAN, of Salem, in the county of Washtenaw and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and
' do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to-oil-cans for oiling carriages, machinery, and other purposes; and it consists in connecting the stopper to an exterior slide, which may be manipulated by the thumb, so as to regulate the flow of oil, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an oil-can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents an oil-can with spout or nozzle B. O is the stopper for the same. The outer end of this stopper is fastened to a slide, D, which runs on the outside of the can through a guide, E, attached thereto, and the inner end of the slide is bent to form, or otherwise provided with, a thumb-piece, D. When the hand grasps the oil-can the thumb is placed upon the thumb-piece, and the stopper can then easily, by a simple movement of the thumb, be drawn out more or less, so as to regulate the flow of oil.
The stopper 0 is also made tapering and hollowed out, as shown at a, on its under side, at the inner end, so as to facilitate the flow of oil, and allow the oil to pass out without entirely removing the stopper.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An oil-can provided with a stopper attached to an exterior slide, arranged to be operated by the thumb, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of October, 1876.
ADDISON BERDAN.
