Description

Sept. 13, 1932. F. HILL WASHING APPARATUS Filed May 14, 1929 Patented Sept. 13, 1932 UNITED. Si'lffffl-5 "PATENT OFFICE* FREDERICKHILL, .orinar/:smelt VENcsrmiNn y' y WASHINGnrramvrnsy Aiipiicaun mea may 14, maestria-Nq. seaoeaand in Great Britain May l1e, iezs.
This invention of improvements in appara'- tu; for use in washing animal ol'als 'and for other analogous purposes relates specially to apparatus for Vwashing tripes, animal feet and other, animal 'ofalsand is applicablealso in apparatus for other analogouspurposes as, for example, for washing roots.' f
The invention yprovides an apparatus in which the' washingliquid is made to' flow in one direction and the material to lbe washed is made to Ypass throughV the, apparatus fin a contrary direction by the action of persons handling or working the material in the 3 washing thereof so ythat the materialis wash- "15 ed progressively in cleaner water and lastly in clean water and the dirt or other matter washed off or from the material is `carried 'out of the apparatus with theV waste water so that there is 110, or little accumulation of dirt or waste matter inthe apparatus. p This invention consistsy in a washing apparatus comprising a tank presenting a channel for the flow of waterfand provided at one end with a pipe or pipes 'or other means for the supply of waterjand if'desirablefa pipe or pipes for thefsupply of steam or other means for heating watersupplied, if heating be desirable or` necessary, and providedat the other end with an outlet weir or overflow opening or passage employed orcontrived with a battley or counterplate or` formed as a pipe or pipes or channel or channels with the entrance or entrances at the lower end and the outlet or outlets'at ahigher level or made to rise :trom the entrance or entrancesand to Vdescend to an outlet or outlets at or above the level of the entrance or entrances or otherwise Jr`or water to pass to it from near the bottom of the tank so that while the water flowing through the tank shall be'kept in a stream of approximately constant depth Ythe water `flowing from the tank shall carry out with it all or nearly all the dirt or matter washed olf or out of thematerial. l. v
The material to be washed may be placed or suppliedby hand orotherwise in or to the tank .at one end thereof and the washed material may be removed at the other end of the tank by hand or inany other manner. A washing apparatus provided according to the invention in a form to be Adescribed as 4an illustrative embodiment, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. lisa sideelevation of the apparatus and Fig. 2 is arplan thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectiontaken approximately on the plane in'- dicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4
is a vertical section taken approximately on the plane indicated by the line44 of Fig. v
`2. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section ona i larger scale than Figs. 3 and 4 showing the 'formation ofthe vupper edgesv of the apparatus. A .v
The same numerals of reference are employedto indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. Y
The washing apparatus shown in Figs. 1, 2, V3 andl 4 of the drawing, vcomprises a tank 6 divided for theV greater part of its length by a partition 7 into two compartments or limbs 8 and 9, each closed at one end and communieating by and only lby their other ends in a part of the tank 'bounded by a wall 10 curved approximately in a semi-circle. The Y one compartment or limb 8 at or neary its closedend is furnished with, Yas showna pipe 11 or if desirable with two or more such pipes, for the supply owater or it may be supplied 'otherwise with ruiming waterand, if heating i be desirable or necessary, furnished with a pipe for the supply of steam or other means forheating the water supplied. The closed end of the other compartment or limb 9 is soV furnished with "an outlet 12V for water and withV a ymid-feather or partition 13 extending across it and nearly to the bottom of the tank 6 and with another mid-feather or wall or partition 14 extending from the bottom upwards to near the top of the tank 6 to divide the interior of the tank Gironi the outlet 12. The outlet 12 for water is shown as a straight channel orpassageextending across and below the compartment or limb 9 and bounded in part by the end and one side thereof, and the mid-feather or partition 7 and in part by thefmid-feather or wall or partition 14 which parts are'all madeto extend or provided lwith partsextending down to the lower lendof the outlet 'channel 12. The walls and bottomy of lthe tank 6, the partition 7, the mid-feather or partition 18 and mid-feather or wall 14 are all shown as formed of metal sheet or plate and riveted together and to a framework 17 further to be described herein.
Beads or rims of sheet metal folded or curled upon itself, as shown best in Fig. 5 are shown as applied o-n and secured as by riveting on the upper edges of the wall of the tank 6', the partition 7 and the mid-feather or partition 13 in order to obviate risk of injury to the wet and tender hands andV arms of operators workingwith the apparatus. 16 is a stay secured as by riveting to the partiti on 7 at the end nearest, the rounded end of the tank 6 and to the wall of the tank 6 at the sides in order to secure the partition 7 against bending or strain. r[he stay 16 is'made to present a semi-circular transverse section or rounded upper `surface so as to obviatc risk 0f injury to the wet and soft hands and arms of operators.
The frame-work 17 serving to support and stiften the walls and bottom of the tank 6 by being riveted thereto and to form legs or feet is shown as formed of angle .plates which in the case of the two nearer the rounded end of the tank 6, are divided along partV of the angle so that each is made to present one arm to extend up the side ofthe tank 6V and another arm which is bent to extend across beneath the bottom of the tank 6. Around a hole 18 in the bottom of the compartment or limb 8 of the tank 6, an annular internally screwthreaded collarV 19 is secured to receive a screw-threaded plug 20 which is ordinarily made to close the hole 18 but may be removed when requisite for the tank 6v to be cleaned. Preferably the tank 6 is galvanized 'when fully constructed.
In the use of the apparatus shown, four operators usually work with the tank 6, standing approximatelyl at the places indicated by the numerals 21, 22, 23, 24, and work in succession in the order of those numerals with the animal oifal or other material to be washed.
VWater being made to flow through the tank 6 from the inlet 11 to the outlet 12 and heated if necessary or desirable, the animal ol'l'alor other material to be washed is introduced into the one compartment or limb 9 of the tank 6 near the outlet 12 for water and by the introduction ofV fresh material and by the action of persons handling or working the material in the washing thereof, the material is passed gradually first along that compartment or limb 9 and then into the other, 8, and eventually to the end at which that other limb or compartment S is supplied with water and so as it becomes cleaner lit is washed with gradually cleaner and finally with clean water while all or nearly all the dirt or other matter removed from the material washed, is carried out of the tank 6 with the out-Howing water.
Levee/e vhot water.
