Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANGISKA P. SCHMITTHENNER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IVN TOY PUZZLE-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N `o. 187,420. dated February 13, i877 application tiled January 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FEANcrsKA P. SCHMITT- HENNER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Toy Puzzles, which improvement is. fully set forth in the following specifications, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of a series of letters, constructed according to my invenl tion, when the same are put together. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when taken apart. i f
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists of a toy puzzle composed of a series of letters and figures, each letter or gure being made in two or more sections, on each of which is marked a key to indicate the letter or figure of which the same forms a part, so that by means of said key the various sections for each letter or ligurecan be readily selected, and dierent lettersfztigf ures, words, or sentences can be formed, thus providinga toy which serves both for amusement and for instruction.
In the drawing I have represented three letters of the alphabet, a, b, and c, which are intended to be cut out of wood, card-board, orany other suitable material, and which may be Vcolored to suit the' taste and convenience. Each of those letters is composedof two or more sections; the letter a, for instance, being composed ot' four, the letter b of four, and the letter c of two sections, and on each of these sections is marked a suitable key; for instance, on each ot' the sections which compose the letter a is marked an a., on each of the sections b is marked a b, and so on; but, ifdesired, other characters, figures, or designs may be selected for the various keys.
in relation to each other.V When all the Y .letters and iigures are taken apart, and the sections composing the same are mixed up, it requires some skill and patience to pick out the parts requisite to form words, figures, or sentences, and a toy is obtained which serves for instruction as well as for amusement.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A toy puzzle composed of a series of letters cut from suitable material, each letter being composed of two or more sections, and each section provided with a key to indicate the letter of which the section forms part, the entire series when properly brought together representing the capitals and smaller letters of the alphabet, as and for the purpose set forth. y
In testimony that l claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of January, 1877.
