IMPROVEMENT IN GAME AND OTHER BOARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,601, dated May 25, 1875; application filed February 8, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MORGAN,

of Cleveland, State of Ohio, have invented a Show-Board with Movable Characters, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to present a convenient means of playing games, such as chess and checkers, (and all other games which are played upon a board by moving the pieces from one part to another,) upon a board in such a position as that the game may be viewed by spectators; also, a convenient method of presenting railroad timetables, price-lists of all kinds, and other advertisements; different changes or combinations of letters or figures, or images of any kind for public or private instruction or amusement, or both, by means of a board of suitable material, with corresponding coloring and arrangement upon each side, in case the application requires it, with slots extending to all parts, in which are moved showpieces, so formed and arranged as to be seen and moved from one side, and also seen upon the opposite side.

Figure 3 of the accompanying drawing represents a board, with slots running from a to h, intersected by, and at right angles with, slots at b, c, d, e, f, g, and h, running to connect with shorter slots, in which pieces, as Fig. 1, are placed in position.

Fig. 1 represents a double piece, consisting of a bar, A E, long enough to play through the slots in a board, Fig. 3, and characters fastened to the bar at A and E, and formed according as the piece is to be used for some one or more of the uses hereinafter described.

Fig. 2 represents the relation of the pieces a, b, and 0, while the piece 1) passes along the slot d c.

A more particular description of the invention, together with its uses, is as follows:

Fig. 3 is a slotted board, with a slot running, as a to h, at right angles with, and intersected by, slots at b, 0, 61,6, f, g, and h,

. running to connect with shorter slots to hold the pieces, and corresponding coloring and arrangement upon each side of the board, in case the application requires it; while 1 represents a double piece, the piece A being connected with the piece E by means of a suitable bar, A E, of sufficient length to play through the slots in the board, Fig.. 3, and allow the piece A to be viewed upon one side ot' the board by the spectators, while the piece E, with the handle B E, is viewed upon the other side by the players.

The invention may be used for several purposes, and the slotted board may have more or less slots, variously arranged, according to the use to which it is applied, and each side may correspond in color and arrangement, or not, as the application requires. The double pieces, as Fig. 1, may also be changed, according as theircombination with the board, Fig. 3, is used for one or more of the following purposes First. When used as an upright chessboard, the squares of the chess-board each have corresponding squares of the same color upon the opposite side of the board, and the parts A E of the characters, as represented in Fig. 1, correspond and are made in the form of chess-men.

Second. The parts A and E of Fig. 1 may be made in the form of checkers, and the combination used as a checker-board.

Third. The slots in the board, Fig. 3, may

be more numerous and differently arranged, and letters and figures substituted for the parts A and E of Fig. 1, and the combination used for railroad'time-tables, price-lists of all kinds, or other advertisements.

Fourth. The slots in the board may be suitably arranged, and letters or figures or images substituted for the parts A and E of Fig. 1, and the combination may be used for public or private instruction or amusement, or both.

Fifth. In any case, where it will be convenient, the part A or E may be formed merely for the purpose of keeping the double piece in position; but I do not wish to limit my invention merely to these uses described, but it may be applied to any other similar use.

I claim as my invention- 1. The game or other board herein described, having the checkered squares, and provided with slots arranged from the outside border to every square thereof, substantially as and for the purposes described.

said slots being arranged as described, so that a character or piece may be moved by a person on either side of the board from one position to any other position on the said board, substantially as and for the purposes described.
