IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVEL-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,993, dated February 6, 1877 application filed August 7, 1876. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY CLAY Dow, of Tampico. in the countyof Whitesides and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shovel-Plow, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved shovel-plow, which shall be so constructed that'it may be adjusted for use as an ordinary shovel-plow, or turned toward either side to form a right or left hand plow, as the particular work to be done may require.
The invention consists in the plow-plate, the
right-angled bar, and the obtuse-angled bar,
constructed and combined with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the plow-plate, which is made diamondshaped in its general form, with its upper angle cut off, and the edge rounded off, as shown in Fig. 2. B is a brace or supportingbar, which is bent at rightangles, so that its upper arm may be vertical and its lower arm horizontal. The horizontal arm of the bar B, ,which serves as a foot for the plow, is made with its lower side right-angled, as shown in Fig. 1, and its forward end is beveled off, and is riveted to the lower angle of the plow-plate A. The end of the vertical arm of the bar B is riveted to the upper end of the plow-plate A. The lower part of the plow-plate A is concaved and curved, and its side edges are curved forward, so that they Will Wear sharp. The upper part of the plow-plate A is flat, and is curved forward at a little greater curve than the lower part. 0 is a bar, the lower part of which fits against the rear side of the vertical arm of the bar B, and is slotted to receive the bolt E, by which it is secured to said vertical arm, so that the plow can be adjusted higher or lower, as may be desired. The bar Ois bent at an obtuse augle,-and has holes formed in it to receive the bolts E, by which it is secured to the standard D.
By this construction, by loosening the bolt E, the plow-plate A may be turned down to the right or left, as may be desired, and by tightening the said bolt it will be held securely in the position into which it has been adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The plow-plate A, the right-angled bar B, and the obtuse-angled bar 0, constructed and combined with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS HENRY CLAY DOW.
