Be it known that I, THOMAS KELLY GoD- BEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valdo, in the county of Alachua and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Oultivator-Tooth, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in cultivator-teeth; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved cultivator-tooth. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line oc of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a front view.
The harrow beam A may be of any desired construction, and the'tooth-securing hooks B are inserted transversely through the beam, as shown, the said hooks being adapted to engage the upper end of the tooth and' provided with'threaded shanks, on which securing-nuts C are mounted. A clamping-plate D is arranged between the hooks and against the side of the beam, and is provided on its outer side with a series of vertical grooves E, as clearly shown. The upper end of the tooth Fis provided on its inner and outer sides with longitudinal vertical ribs G, which are adapted to engage the vertical grooves of the clamping-plate, so as to prevent rotation of the tooth when it is in position. The securing-hooks are tightened in place by turning the securing-nuts home, and thereby serve to clamp the upper end of the tooth against the clamping plate, with the ribs thereon engaging the grooves of said plate.
It will be seen that the tooth and clampingplate may be readily exchanged from the outer to the inner side of the beam A, or vice versa, owing to the shank of the tooth being provided with the ribs Gr on its inner and outer sides and the clamping-plate being detachable. The tooth may also be adjusted to work at any desired angle to the beam. 'The body of the tooth is substantially L shape, the shank F thereof projecting upward from the upper end of the vertical arm of the same. The lower arm of the tooth extends rearward and outward, the upper edge being 5o.
curved 'on the arc of a circle, while the lower edge extends outward and rearward on very nearly a straight line. This arrangement causes the rear portion of the tooth to as sume a convex shape, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, so as to turn the dirt away from the furrow as the tooth is drawn along.
The harrow provided with my improved teeth is drawn over the ground in the usual manner, and the lower edge of the tooth will take into the ground and turn up the same in the usual manner. As the earth is turned up, the concave outer face of the tooth will throw the saine over onto the unplowed ground and away from the furrow, so as to leave a clean open furrow and thoroughly pulverize the earth. It will be observed that my tooth is very simple in its construction and that it can be readily adjusted to run at any angle and to any desired depth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The improved tooth consisting of an L- shaped body provided with a vertical shank and a curved horizontal blade, the upper and lower edges lof the blade being of different degrees of curvature, and with a concave or spoon-shaped face extending from the shank, the lower edge of the blade being slightly curved, while the upper edge is curved on the arc of a smaller circle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the beam having transverse perforations, the securing-hooks having threaded shanks, the nuts mounted on the latter, the detachable clamping-plate having vertical grooves in its outer side, and
