Description

y 1932- c. s. BARON 1,865,737
CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Original Filed July 17, 1929- Z8 Z0 Z2 Z Patented July 5, 1932 UNETED STATE.
CHARLES S. BARON, F TIFFIN, OHIO 1 CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Application filed July 1'7, 1929, Serial No. 378,985. Renewed November 16, 1931.
My present invention relates to closures for containers adapted to hold solids, or liquids, with means provided for hermetically sealing the closure if desired, and it has for its object improvements in means for conveniently attaching the closure to a container, and for detaching the one from the other.
What constitutes my invention will be hereinafter specified in detail and succinctly defined in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing which constitutes a part of this specification,
Figure I is a side elevation of the upper ortion of a container showing my closure applied thereto, with the lid thereof shown in the open position.
Figure II is a diametrical vertical section of the subject matter of Figure I, showing the lid in the closed position.
Figure III is a detail illustration of the hinge member which unites the lid of the closure to the band thereof, and the means for detachably attaching the band to the container.
Figure IV is a section on the line IVIV of Figure II.
Referring to the numerals on the drawing, 1 indicates the body of a container, which may be made of any suitable material, for example glass. It is provided preferably with a neck 2 that surrounds the mouth of the container and which is defined from the body 1 by an external intermediate annular groove or depression 3. The container may be made of any suitable and preferred dimensions and capacity.
WVithin the groove 3, I provide a circumambient band 4, preferably consisting of a strip of stiff sheet metal having overlapping 49 terminals 5 and 6, which are of a conjoint thickness that will snugly fill a recess provided for their operative accommodation within a casing of a hinge member 7 that is formed by an inbent lip 8 on said member.
Each terminal of the band is defined by a notch preferably of the shape indicated at 9 and 10, respectively.
The space between the opposite faces of the lip 8 and the member 7 is spanned by a holding member preferably consisting of a cylinder which may be comprised, for instance, in
a tubular rivet 11 for fastening it to said lip and member 7. r
' On the side of the band 4 that is diametri cally opposite the terminals 5 and 6, I provide a latch-keeper 14 that is formed in the band 4, preferably by bending the body thereof into a projection outstanding beyond the periphery of the neck 2. At a point between the keeper 14: and the overlapping terminals 5 and 6 of the band, I provide in the" metal of the band a loop 15, whereby, through pressure brought, to bear upon it as by a pairof hand pliers, the legs of the loop may be squeezed together so as to draw the band taut into the groove 3. Permanent flexure of the band, so imparted, serves to hold the band fixedly in place in the groove.
Theconnection between the hinge member 7 and'the' band 4 might be, without employ- 79 ment of the'notched terminals 5 and 6, made permanent, and the loop 15 relied upon solely for adjusting the band in place and for securing it in the groove 3. In such case, the circumference of the band being suflicient to permit it to be slipped over the neck 2, the squeezingtogether of the legs of the loop would serveto'take .up the slack of the band and fasten it in place in the groove 3; but at present I regard the use of the detachable notched terminals as preferable, because it facilitates upon occasion the detachment of the band from the containeri The hinge member 7 is provided with means for effecting a hinge connection with the lid 17, the same being preferably perfected by tongues formed of the metal of said member inserted into aligned slots 18 and. 19 formed in the rim 20 of the lid to form hinge knuckles 21 and 22 in the complete device, said tongues being preferably bent outwardly.
The rim 20 is formed by bending the metal of the lid outwardly from a flange 23 so as to form at the junction of said rim and flange a smooth annular bearing face 24 which cooperates with sealing efiect, as, for example, against an annular elastic band 25 countersunk in a groove provided for it in the periphery of the neck 2. This feature,
however, does not form a part of my present invention, being claimed by me in a separate application for U. S. Letters Patent Serial Number 37 8,984, filed of even date herewith. It is, however, deemed to be in order to refer to it because of the form of latch mechanism which I prefer to employ in cooperative relationship to the keeper 14, in such cases as it may be desirable to provide upon the closure a latch mechanism for holding the lid in the closed position over the neck 2 of whatever description it may be.
Said latch mechanism comprises a hinge member 26 secured to the rim 2O substantially in the same manner as. the hinge member 7 is secured thereto, with the exception that the knuckles 28 thereof are bent downwardly and inwardly instead of upwardly and outwardly as in the forming of the knuckles 21 and 22. The body of the latch member proper is bent to form a lip 30 that is adapted to engage the keeper 14:. From said lip the latch member is extended sufiiciently to constitute an actuating lever 31 for manipulating it in opening and closing the lip 30 with reference to the keeper.
The operation of my device herein described is deemed to require no further description to one skilled in the art than that which is supplied by the foregoing specification in view of the drawing.
What I claim is: p The combination with a container bod, and a neck surrounding the mouth thereoii and having an external annular groove, of a metallic band having overlapping terminals fitting within the said groove, a lid hinged to the band, a loop formed in the body of the band adapted for application of tension and permanent flexure thereto in order to hold the band in the groove, a hinge member by which the lid is secured to the band, and means for attaching and detaching at will {:jlge terminals of the band to the hinge mem- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES S. BARON.
