Description
A. MONTGOMERY.
SPIDERS FOR SCALE-BEAMS.
No.186,149 Patented Jan. 9, 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ARCHIBALD MONTGOMERY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIDERS FOR SCALE-BEAMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 86,149, dated January 9, 1877; application tiled May 17, 1876.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD MONT- GOMERY, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Spiders for Scale- Beams, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to so construct the spider which supports the scoop or tray of weighing-scales that the slipping of the same over the arms of the spider is prevented, and this object I attain in the following manner:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of a tray for weighingscales, with my improved spider for supporting the said tray; and Fig. 2 a sectional view of the end of one of the arms of the spider.
In ordinary scales, the scoop or tray A is arranged to rest directly upon the ends of the metallic arms of the spider, and, when thrown down on the same, not only creates an unpleasant noise, but slides over, and sometimes entirely ofi" of, the arms, which scratch or otherwise wound the polished surface of the tray.
These objections I overcome by providing the end of each arm a of the spider B with a pad, b, of rubber, cork, leather, or other equivalent yielding material. These pads support the tray, tend to retain it in its proper position on the spider, and absorb the shocks which result from hastily placing or throwing the tray on the spider.
In order to attach the pads to the arms of the spider, so that there shall be no risk of their accidental displacement, I enlarge the ends of the arms, and either recess them, as shown in Fig. 2, for the reception of pads in the form of blocks, or else make the pad in the form of a tube, which is slipped over the enlarged end of the arm, as shown at the righthand side of Fig. 1, and, by its contraction behind the enlarged end is firmly held in place and prevented from slipping.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the tray A of a weighing-scale with the spider B, having arms a with enlarged ends, for the reception and retention of pads b, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AROHIBALD MONTGOMERY.
