SHOE-POLISHING DEVICE.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, LoUIs T. SMrrI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Polishing Devices for Polishing Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention comprises improvement in shoepolishing device, for polishing shoes, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide means for polishing either a tan or black leather shoe without discoloration from one to the other; second, to provide means for a durable and economical shoepolishing device; third, to provide means whereby a single casing will cover either polishing pad while the other polishing pad is in. use, and also protect the hand from coming in contact with either polishing pad.

I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my shoepolishing device open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same closed ready for use. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of my shoe-polishing device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the casing and movable bottom, with one side of the casing removed.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The main body portion 1, may be made of wood or any other suitable material, having two polishing pads attached thereto, one on each side thereof, shown at 2; these polishing pads may be made of felt or any other suitable material, preferably felt of the proper length, width, and thickness. Pad casing 3 may be made of wood or any other suitable material, and is for the purpose of holding therein polishing pad 2, which is not in use; said casing being attached to body portion 1, by fiat metallic plates l, and

ness, having rounded ends, and are held in place by pivots 5, on which said body portion 1, and said casing 3, revolve. When either one of the polishing pads is inserted in casing 3, the same is held in place by wire clasp 6. Said casing 3, has a movable bottom 7 therein, the same being loose in casing 3, and is movable from one side of said casing to the other, when polishing pad 2 is inserted therein. This movable bottom 7, may be made of wood or any other suitable material, and held in place in said casing by flanges 9, and polishing pad 2, and is for the purpose of protecting the hand from coming in contact with the polishing pad not in use, when the same is reversed and in casing 3. Wire clasp G is fastened to body portion 1 by pivots S, and is t-urnable thereon; this clasp is made in shape to fit over the end of casing 3, and is for the purpose of clasping and holding said casing 3, and said body portion 1., together, when polishing pad 2 is inserted in said casing 3.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a shoe-polishing device of the character described, the combination of a body portion having polishing pads attached thereto, a casing to contain either of said polishing pads, and pivotal means for connecting said casing to said body portion, means for retaining said body portion and said polishing pads and said casing in position when ready for use; a movable bottom in said casing, and means for retaining said movable bottom in said casing, substantially as shown and described.
