Description

May 31, 1932- L. F. RO'SENBAUM TROUSERS Filed April 27. 1931 INVENTOR Lcs fgr F. Roscnbqum WERNi to which extends under the placket opening Patented May 31, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE LESTER F. ROSENB AUM, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGliTOR TO SAM ROSENBAUM SONS & COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN TROUSERS Application filed April 27,-
The main object of this invention is to provide a pair of trousers, knickerbockers or like garment having a'waistband continuous across the front of the garment and waist fas- 5 tening means which are effectively concealed when the garment is adjusted to the wearer. Another object is to provide a garment of the character described which is neat and attractive in: appearance and well adapted for close fitting.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and ,pointed out in the claims.
A structure whichisapreferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with my invention. p
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the upper portion of the trousers illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 on an en- 2 larged scale showing the placket closed, and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the closed placket taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the trousers 1 have a front portion 2 and a back portion 3 which are sewed together by a side welt seam 4. The sewing of the welt seam 4 terminates I at the lower edge 5 of a side pocket 6 for the purpose of providing a placket opening 7 which is adapted to be closed by an outer flap 8 and an inner flap 9: I
a The edge of the outer flap 8 is provided with an inner fold 10 as illustrated by Fig. 4 for the purpose of providing a welt seam 11 which is in line with the side welt seam 4 of the trousers when the outer flap 8 is in a closed position with respect to the inner flap 9.
A reinforcing strip or lining 12 is secured to the inner side of the outer flap 8 and terminates'in a fold 13, the outer edge of which is in stepped relation to the outer edge of the welt seam 11.
The inner flap 9 is similarly provided with i a reinforcing strip 14 or lining secured there- 1931. Serial No. 533L087.
7 as shown by Fig 4. The edge of the reinforcing strip 14 is provided with a. fold 15 to which is secured afinishing strip 16 by means of stitching 17.
Placket fastening means 18 consisting of a pair of coacting slide actuated interlocking elements 19 and 20 which are supported by supporting strips 21' and 22, respectively, is disposed under the welt seam 11 of the outer flap 8. The supporting strip 22 is preferably secured between the welt seams 11 and '13 of the outer flap 8 and its reinforcing strip 12 by means of stitching 23. The other supporting flap 21 is similarly secured between a fold 24 at the edge of the inner flap 9 and its reinforcing strip 14 and the finishing strip 16 19 and 20 are adapted to be interlocked with each other by means of an'interlocking slide 26 having a small finger piece 27. When the finger piece 27 is grasped and the interlocking slide 26 pulled upwardly, it moves the rows of interlocking elements 19 and 20 to gether and interlocks them. When the interlocking slide 26 is moved downwardly,;the rows of interlocking elements are disengaged from each other and the placket? is opened The upper part of the garment is preferably finished by a waist band 28 which extends around the top of and across the front of the garment and terminates in weltcseams as described above in connection with Fig. 4. A tab 29 may be secured to the upper part of the waist band 28 which is adapted to extend over and cover the interlocking slide 26 when the latter is in its extreme upper position. The tab 29 is provided with a buttonhole 30 for the passage of a fastening button 31 which is secured to the inner flap 9. The interlocking slide 26 is preferably of on n.
the type which is locked in position when the finger piece 27 lies alongside of the rows of interlocking elements so that when the auxiliary flap 29 is secured to the button 31 over the fin er piece 26 there is no likelihood of the p acket fastening means inadvertently openin The back portlon 3 of the trousers 1 may be provided with a pair of straps 32 and 33 having a buckle 34 associated therewith for varying the length of the waist band 28. These trousers may be made a substantial fit but where they are slightly large the adjusting of the straps 32 and 33 draws them tight across the front and gives them a proper fit without the use of either belt or suspenders. With the adjustment of the straps the trousers are quite comparable tosailors trousers which need neither belt nor suspenders for support. The latter are provided with a lacing adjustment at the back to take up the small amount of slack, which applicant accomplishes by the adjusting straps. It is preferable to grade the sizes of the trousers so that the wearer can be fitted snugly enough to afford support without the necessity of using the adjusting straps. The trousers are made preferably a snug fit. The
special construction with the continuous band across the front and the continuous placket fastening at the side makes a snug fit possible to effectively support the garment and at the same time there is no bulging between the buttons at the fiy, that being avoidedby the close fit and the continuous band above. The straps 32 and 33 and the buckle 34 may of course be dispensed with without affecting the desirable features of my invention. a
It will be appreciated that the above construction described gives an extremely neat appearance to the trousers, especially at the waist thereof. The use of a belt or suspenders for holding the trousers up is entirely eliminated.
It will be noticed that the waist band 28 does not open at the fly 35 of the trousers but is continuous and carries right over to the side to the placket. It will also be observed that the welt seam 11 is provided to cover the fastening means and gives the appearance of a continuation to the side welt seam 4, so" that when the trousers are worn the fastening means cannot be seen, thereby imparting to the garment an extremely well tailored appearance.
The invention also achieves a very fine fit at the waist of the trousers without the use of either belt or suspenders as mentioned above. 1 1
While I have described my invention with particular reference to trousers for men, it will be understood that it is equally applicable to other outer garments such as pants for small boys and skirts and the like for women.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction described in connection 55 with my preferred embodiment without departing from the scope of my broader claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to ters Patent, is:
1. A pair of trousers of the character described having an opening at one side thereof in line with the vertical side welt seam of the trousers, a waistband encircling the waist of said trousers and having the ends thereof terminating at said side opening, said waistband being neatly secured to said trousers whereby to form a beltless finishing top therefor, a pair of overlapping flaps at the side opening, each of said flaps having a reinforcing strip secured thereto, folded inwardly in stepped relation with the inward fold of the flaps, the reinforcing strip of the inner flap extending under the opening and terminating in an inner fold, a finishing strip secured to said reinforcing strip and to the fold on the flap reinforced thereby, a placket fastener consisting of a pair of coacting rows of slide actuated interlocking fastener elements, each secured to supporting strips that are in turn stitched between the folds of the flaps and reinforcing strips, respectively, whereby to secure the flaps together in the line of the side Welt seam of the trousers, and an interlocking actuating slide coacting with said rows of fastener elements for engaging and disengaging said fastener elements, said outer flap including a welt seam'extension completely hiding said placket fastener and extending in the lineof the said side welt seam thereby giving a neatly tailored appearance to the trousers.
2. A pair of trousersor like garment having a continuous firm waistband across the front with a fly opening therebencath, a waist placket opening at the side, interlockin fastener elements secured to the edges of said placket opening, and a coacting slide to actuate said interlocking fastener elements to unite the edges with a continuous fastener to form a close fitting band and garment that will be effectively supported on the body of the wearer.
3. A pair of trousers or like garment having a continuous firm waistband across the front, with a fiy opening therebeneath, at waist placket opening at the side, interlocking fastener elements secured to the edges of said placket opening, a coacting slide to actuate said interlocking fastener elements to unite the edges with a continuous fastener to form a. close fitting band and garment that will be effectively supported on the body .of the wearer, and adjusting straps and means at the back of said garment.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LESTER F. ROSENBAUM.
