Our invention relates to the knives and holding means therefor for veneer lathes.
Heretofore, the knives of veneer lathes which are from 24 to 108 inches in length and are correspondingly costly have been provided with regularly spaced bolt. slots by which they are fastened to the knife bar. These bolt slots have tended to weaken the blade, have increased the cost of manufacture 10 and prevented the re-grinding of the knife blade but a relatively short distance back from the original cutting edge, thus reducing its period of usefulness and requiring frequent replacements.
to provide an efficient and inexpensive knife holding means for veneer lathes particularly adapted to hold knives without slotsfirmly against being driven back on the knife bar from the impact of the knife with the work.
A further object of our invention is to provide knife holding means and a knife adapted to cooperate to cause the grip of the holding element to tighten on the knife under the in fluence of the latter with the work.
A further object of our invention is to provide knife and knife holding means adapted to facilitate the changing of the knife blade which was a relatively slow operation with the old slotted type of veneer lathe knife.
We obtain these objects in a veneer lathe, the combination of a knife-bar provided on one side with a threaded hole, a cooperating knife-clamping bar provided with a hole to receive a clamping bolt, the opposed faces of the knife-bar and the clamping-bar being adapted to provide an inwardly tapering wedge-shaped knife-holding space between them, a clamping bolt inserted through sald hole of the clamping-bar into said knife-bar, the extremity of said bolt being provided with means for rockably engaging the clamping-bar, and a set screw threaded in said clamping-bar and bearing on said knife-bar,
whereby to rock the clamping bar to clamp the knife firmly against the knife-bar.

Referring to Fig. 1, the veneer lathe may be of any standard form and in this embodiment comprises'a frame a supporting a log a; from which veneer is. to be cut, and a knife head 6, the latter provided with a longitudinal. recess 0, adapted to receive one leg (1 of an A-shape in ,cross section knife bar d. By this construction,.the bolts 9 serve as a fulcrum for the knife clamping bar band permit the latter to be rocked by the set screws 19 to hold the clamping bar firmly upon the knife over its entire surface.
F urther, due to the taper or wedge-shape of the knife blade its tendency is to be held more tightly under the impact with the work. Also, to remove the knife and replaceit with another it is only'necessary to loosen the "set screws 10 which will relieve the clamping action upon the knife, take out the old knife and insert the new knife andtighten the set screws, a matter of only a few minutes, and

In a veneer lathe the combinationlof a knife bar of A-shaped cross section, one side of the bar provided with a recess for the knife and with threaded sockets adjacent such recess, a knife clamping bar formed to lie against said side of the knife bar, and with a head projecting into the said recess of the latter, the opposed faces of one wall of said recess and of the head of said clamping bar being adapted to provide an inwardly taper- 'i'ng wedge-shaped knife holding space between them, a knife correspondingly wedge- 7 inserted through said recesses and threaded in said bolt sockets, the hooked heads of saidthe knife clamping bar and the knife bar being adapted to rovide an inwardly tapering wedge-shaped knife holding space, a knife correspondingly wedge-shaped adapted to be inserted in said knife recelving space, a bolt whereby 'to rock the clamping bar to clamp the knifefirml against the knife bar. a ARHAM M.
