:This. invention relates to knives for use upon veneer cutting machines and its'object is to reduce the cost of the knives, prolong the effective life of the same and lessen the cost'of maintenance. "These objects are attained in such: a device as is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, and the invention resides incertainnovel features which will be particularly defined in the appended claims.

'* Veneer knives, as now generally constructed, consist of a flat-"bar of metal held between two frame bars or clamping plates and profvided in their inneredge portions with a plurality of notches to accommodate the fastening .devices whereby. the clamping bars are held together and to the knife. As the knife 'is sharpened, the cutting edge approaches the -ends ofthese notches and eventually the cuttingfedge will wear through so that the ends of the notches break away and an uneven cut of the log is the result. When this condition arises, the remaining portion of the knife is waste material. vMoreover, with such construction, it isfneces'sary to entirely separate the knife-holdingbars in order to permit the removal or reins'ertion of the knife when regrinding is necessary whichme'ans a loss of time and, moreover, requires the expenditure of considerable labor in effecting a uniform adjustment of the knife when itisin place between the-bars. vides means whereby the present waste is avoided and the knife maybe easily adjusted while in place'between the clamping bars and will be uniformly adjusted through its entire length. M j a f. V

These described fastening devices securethe bars- 1 and 4 together in such mannerthat relative movement of either bar is prevented while at thesame time aspace is defined between the bars to receive the knife. blade 10 and adjusting devices which are about to be described, the set bolts 5 providing for a limited rockingof the upper bar, whereby its forward edge will be caused to bear strongly upon the blade adjacent the-Jcutting edge thereof. It may be noted upon reference'to Fig.3 that the'lower clamping bar 1 extendedvery close tothe extreme cuttingedge of the knife so that the knife is very firmly supported and will effectually maintain its engagement with the log during the cutting operation. According to my invention, the knife blade has an uninterrupted straight back edge, .as shown at 11.- Resting slidably upon the clamping bar 1 betweenthe several lugs 3 are followers 12 of the same thickness as the knife-blade and having-straight ends 13 presented to and bearing against the back lowers being straight and parallel so asto fit closely but slidably between adjacent lugs,
as clearly shownin Fig. 2, while theback endsof the followers are disposed diagonally,
as shown at 14:. Resting'slidably upon the bar 1 between the series of lugs 3 and the 'rib 2 is an adjusting bar or slide having its back edge 16 straight to abut the rib2, as shown in Fig. 2, while its forward edge is formed into spaced extensions 17alternating with the followers 12 and each presenting a diagonal edge 18, ada ted to engage the diagonal edge 14 of a fol ower, and a straight front edge 19 adapted to engage and ride upon the back edge'of a h1g3. Near one end of the slide or adjusting bar 15,1'an internally threaded lug orboss 20. is formed thereon and the clamping bar 4 is provided with a longi I tudinal recess or slot 21 acconnnodatingsaid lug or boss. 7 A hearing plate 22 is provided to close theouter end of said slot and in said plate is swiveleda' screw or adjusting bolt 23 which has its'inner end engaged in the bore of the boss and its outer end constructed to be engaged by aturning tool. It will be readily seen that rotation of the screw will cause the boss 20 to ride along the same and V correspondinglyshift the slide 15. When the knife isnew, the slide is placed at the extreme limit of its movement .toward theright in Fig. 2, and the several followers 12 will then have'their tapered ends engaged between the several teeth ofthe slide} with their front straight end edges bearing against the back edge of the blade, as'shown in Fig.2. When the knife isto be adjusted to compensate for,
wear, the bolts 5 and 9 are loosened just enough to release the clamping-action of the bars '1 and 4 upon the blade, the slide and the followers, after which the screw 23 is rotated so as to effectinovement of the slide to the left.- As theslide thus moves to the left,
7 the engaging diagonaledges on the slide and the severalfollowers will cause the fol-lowers to move forwardly and this movement will be transmitted directly to the knife blade so that thelatter willfbe set forwardly to the de sired degree; The bolts :6 and '9 are then turned home and the parts will operate as before. When the knife bar has been worn and adjusted to such an extent that the followers will nolonger be in engagement-withthe slide, a filler bar 25, shown in Fig. 6, is employed. This-bar is a rectangularbar of the same thicknessas the blade and the followers andof a length equal to the length of the blade, Bymerely inserting this filler bar be- .tween' the back edge of the blade and the front edges of the several followers,- the described adjustments maybe'repeate'd and the 7 blade used until there is no longer suflicient -v material to permit tl'ie clamping bars 1 and l to secure the same. I V From the foregoing descr1pt1'on,taken in connection witlithe accompanying drawing,
it will be seenthat I'have' provided an exceedingly. simpleinechanismwhich will permist the use of aknife blade until itihas been entirely consumed and which will facilitate the adjnstinent ofthe blade to take upwear and in which the entire length of the blade may be simultaneously adjusted. The knife is secured in position upon the veneer ma chine in the same manner as the knives and knife. holders now in use.
Having thus described the invention, 1 claiin: l 1. The combinationof a lower clamping barhaving a, series of equidistant straight sidedlugs onfits upper face between its front and rearedges and a straight rib on said face along its rear edge, an upper clamping bar provided on its lower face with recesses to fit over said lugs and said rib and be thereby held against relative turning movement, a knife fitting between the forward edges of the bars, followers fitted between the bars and slidably engagedbetween and guided by said lugs and bearing againstthe back edge of the knife, an adjusting bar slidably resting on the lower clamping bar between the rib andlugs thereon and engaging the rib and the followers to shift the followers laterally for setting the blade, and means for securing the clamping bars together whereby to hold the blade, the followers and the adjusting bar in operative relation. 7
2.'T'he combination of upper and lower clamping bars, a knife blade fitted between the front portions of the bars, followers slidably'mounted between the bars and provided with diagonally disposed back edges and having their front edges extending parallelwith the front edges of the bars and abutting the back edge of the blade,means for guiding said followers in" paths at a right angle to the length of the blade, an adjusting bar slidably fitted between the clamping bars longitudinally thereof at the rear of thefollowers and having diagonallydisposed edge portions engaging the diagonal edges of the followers, and having itsback edge slidably engaged with the lower clamping bar, interengaging means on the clamping bars to preclamping bariprovided on its lower face with recesses to engage said lugs and rib whereby to be held against relative turning movement,
means for securing the clamping bars together, a blade disposed between the front portions of the clamping bars, a slide resting on the lower clamping bar between andbe'aring against the r-iband the lugs thereon and having diagonal edge portions alternating with the lug-engaging edge portions, means mounted at one end of the lower clamping bar to adjust the slide thereon longitudinally, and followers slidably resting on the lower clamping bar between and guided by the lugs and having their front edges arrangedto exert pressure on the back edge of the'blade and having their back edges disposed diago nally and engaging the diagonal edge portions of the slide. g
