CLIP FOR GUARD BOARDS OF SCAFFOLDS AND THE LIKE Filed June 18, 1929 end with a lug Or thereof, the limbs `formed of flat metal, one limb of Patented May 10, 1932 UNITED STATES lPATENT ARNOLD CLARENOEMARSHALL, or LONDON, ELTGLALTD,l AssIeNOR To 'man STEEL v GREAT BRITAIN CLIP FOR GUARD-BOARDS or soArFOLns AND vTHE LIKE Y Application ined June 1s, 1929, serial No. 371,930,3.n`a in creat Britaiii July 24, 192s.;
This invention relates to a clip for guardboards of scaft'olds and the like. According to present practice the guardboard Or boards at the edge ofthe platform of a scafold is or are secured by lashing or nailing them to the scaffold poles.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple form of device whereby the lashing or nailing is avoided and, further, to enable a number of boards or planks to be secured edge to edge, not onlyf-or the purpose specified but for erally.
` A clip according to this invention a substantially Ufshaped body,
constructional purposes gencomprises preferably outer `extremity is provided upon its upper side with an upwardly extending lug or projection and upon its under side with a downwardly projecting lug o-r the like. The pro'- jections, where the device is formed` of' wrought or malleable metal, are conveniently formed lby incising the vlimb for a lsuitabley distance from its outer end longitudinally yand bending the parts in the desired directions, the bent portions lying in the same plane.
The second limb is'provided at its outer downwardly. At a convenient distance; from the outer end of the limb a second projection is formed also projecting downwardlyf The limb just referred to is preferably incised longitudinally and centrally of its length, the outer half being turned or bent downwards to form the inner projection;
In use the device isi-placed upon the scaffold pole, 'said pole lying snugly within the crutch projecting forwardly ofk the pole, the distance between thelouter surface of the inner projection upon' thesecond limb and the' plane parallel theret-oin which f lies the rearmost edge of the said crutchbeing equal to the diameter of the pole. The arrangement is" such that/the guardeboard is retained against displacement on one side by the downwardly extending projections at the outer ends of the limbs of the device, and on the other side by means of the pole and the inner downward projection ofthe second limb. ,In `order to prevent accidental diswhich at itsV projection which projectsk placement ofthe device a perforation 7may be;
provided' in one of the limbs through which a nail may be. drivenfin'to the-edge Vof 'the board, the outer end of the nail being turned or bent over.
' i The purpose of the upwardly extending lug previously referred to -is "to engagethe lower edge of a further guard-board or the like shouldy it bedesired toplace this 4above the iirst mentioned guard-board, for as will be vheld to postsor uprights. n Again, clips according to this' invention may be usedl'for securing floor or other boards or planks to'horizontal supports, such logs of scaffolding. i j A Where used for constructional purposes to for example as the put- Vform a hollow walloneclip may be applied to a vertical member toengage aboard upon one side thereof-and a second clip to engage -a boardupon the yother side, the boardsl thus being retained in spaced relationship, the distance between them beingequal to the diameter or thickness of the vertical member.
vObviously as yappliedqto a pole of other than circular crossv sectional outline the outline of the crutch portion ofthe clip kwould be suitably modified. i
In order that the invention may be the better understood lthe accompanying drawings are appended 'showing one form of the invention in which Fig. l is a'perspective view of the clip. y
Figl'Q is a side view showing the clip applied to scaffolding. I
Fig. 3 is a front :view of the clip in use.
Fig. 4 is a view showing va vfurther application of the clip. c

VThe limb cl is provided at its outer end V,with alug g projectingtherefromat a right angle'and in thesamedirection"asthe lug f,
whilst ata suitable distance from nthe outer end of the said limb a lug h is formed extending in the same direction as the .lug,g,-the said limb d being preferably incised longitudinally. and centrally' of Vits-length, thel outer half` being turned or bent to'form the lug 71,.
