Patented Apr. 28, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR CLINTON SNODGRASS, AUG-ISS'IA BURCH HAWKINS, AND WILLIAM F. STAGGERS, OF MANNINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
FASTENER TO CLAMP BOARDS ON" SCAFFOLD BRACKETS.
Application filed May 24, 1923, Serial No. 641,177. Renewed liehrualy a, 1925.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, Oscar: Cmn'ron SNononass. Arisiss'm BURCH Hmvnirrs, and WILLIAM F. S'rAeonns, citizens of the United States, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Fasteners to Clamp Boards on Scaffold Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
In erecting and working on scaffolding workmen are sometimes injured by reason of the boards slipping on the brackets which support them, resulting in serious injury. To prevent the possibility of accidents of this sort occurring we have devised fasteners which securely clamp the boards on metal scaffold brackets in the desired position that the boards cannot slide in any direction.
We attain the objects of our invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention in use on a scaffold bracket;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved and preferred form of our invention;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2, showing an edge view of our device;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of another form of our invention;
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5--5 of Fig. 4: showing an edge view of our device;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the original form of our invention, and
Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 6, showing an edge view of our device.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in Fig. 1 is illustrated the conventional folding scaffold brackets 1, the horizontal members of which consist of pipes on which the boards or planks 2 of the scaffold are supported. We provide like clamping plates 3, connected by a hinge 4t and shaped to engage around the horizontal members of the scaffold bracket 1. Clamping plates 3 are clamped together by suitable means, such as the bolt 8 and wing-nut 7 shown in Figs. 6 and 7, or the bolt 8 shown in Figs. 2-5, which perform an equivalent function. We provide a suitable hook 5 having an end prong 12 which can be driven into the board to hold it firmly in one fixed position on the scaffold brackets. The hook 5 may be of any suitable shape, such. as those illustrated in the drawings, the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7 engaging the edge of the board or the forms shown in Figs. 2 to 5 which en gage the top of the board, the forms shown in Figs. 4- and 5 having an angular portion 9 as illustrated.
In the preferred form of our device, illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, we provide vertical slots 10 in clamping plates 3. We also provide a pin 11 in the shank of clamp 5 in lieu of bolt 6 of the other forms and performing an equivalent function, with the additional function that the slots 10 permit of vertical adjustment of the clamping hook 5 to adjust the device to different sizes of blanks or boards which may be used to complete the scaffold at different times.
The operation of the device will be obvious from the accompanying drawings, the clamping plates 3 being clamped around the horizontal members of the scaffold brackets and the clamp hooks 5 having their prongs driven into the boards of the scaffold to hold them in a position in which they cannot slide, thus providing a secure and on tirely safe support for the workmen using the scaffold.
What we claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of hingedly connected clamping plates suitably shaped to engage around a portion of a scaffold bracket, means for securing said clamping plates tightly on the scaffold bracket, the plates having vertical i slot-s, a clamping hook adapted to be driven into the board, said clamping hook having a pin in its shank slidably mounted in the slotted portions of the clamping plates to permit of adjustment of the clamping hook
