Description
Wma
. UNITED lSTATES' PATENT GEEICE.
SAMUEL WHITNUM, 0F GREEN POINT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-HODS.
ASpeoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,607., dated December 19, 1876; application filed August 18, 1876.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEEWEITNUM, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in COaLHOds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part oi" this specication.
My invention relates to coal-hods; and it consists in so cutting and forming the blank from which the body ofthe hod is made that, when completed, the hod will have a rounded breast, the mouth dropped down close to the breast, and curved backward on an incline, and with acbntracted throat, all as hereinai' ter more fully set forth.
1n order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing,in which- Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the body of the coal-hod is made. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views ot' the completed hod.
A represents the blank from which the body of an ordinary coal-hod is made. From that portion of this blank which should form the mouth of the hod I cut oit' the piece marked B, leaving the edge at the mouth in ogee t'orm, as represented by dotted line in Fig. l. In other words, the blank, at the mouth, has in the edge a central concavity, a, and from this concavity the edge forms a convexity, b, at each side. The metal is then cut away on a gradual curve from the convex points b b, as
shown at :c x, Figs. l and 3, beyond the place where the bale is attached to the back y of the hod.
When the body of the hod is made from this blank, the breast G is rounded, the mouth C is dropped down close to the breast, and the throat is contracted by curving the portions D D, formed by the convex parts b b of' the blank.
By this construction it is not necessary to tilt the hod so much in pouring coal in a stove. Hence, all liability of spilling the coal is obviated; this object being also furthered by contracting the throat at l) l), which also gives the hod a neat and symmetrical appearance.
' I am aware that coal-nods have been made with the mouth cut down; hence, Ido not claim such as being', broadly, my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The coalhod herein described. having its body formed of the blank A, the center of which is provided with concavity a,with convexity b at each side thereof, the metal then dropped down at each side, as shown at w x, and the projecting tips D D, formed on a gradual curve inward, all as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
