Description
J. H. cLARK.
FURNITURE FENDER.
N.185,212, Y Patented' Dec. 12, 1876.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN n. CLARK, 0E ELEMINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNITURE-FENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,212, dated December 12, 1876; application led May l, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. CLARK, of
. the township of Flemington, in the county of Hunterdon and State ofNew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Fender; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is an improved furniture -fender, constructed, as fully described hereafter, to facilitate its Inanufacture and application and reduce its cost.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a' section, of the fender, which consists solely of a block, a, of rubber, rounded at the corners, flat on opposite faces, and having a central tapering opening, a'. rIhis pad is applied by an ordinary screw passed through the opening Heretofore furniture -pads of elastic material have had central openings of uniform diameter and a metal plate, in order to prevent the rubber from being forced laterally beneath the tapering face of the screw-head,
sowas to prevent the pad from becoming loosened.
By reducing the opening a: in diameter toward the inner face of the pad, the latter is caused to grasp the shank of the screw directly below the head, insuring a secure hold Without the use of a plate.
It will be apparent that a pad with a tapering vopening maybe more readily manufactured, and at much less'cost, than the ordi nary pad having a metal plate embedded therein.
I do not claim a furniture-pad made of elastic material, irrespective of its construction; but
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a furniture-pad consisting solely of a circular block of rubber with parallel faces, rounded at the outer edge, and having a central tapering opening, x, as specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto laffix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN H. CLARK. Witnesses: OLIVER BRAKE,
JOHN C. TUNBRIDGE.
