Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. GRINNELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRISTBAND-FASTENER.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 18,445, dated October 20, 1857.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. GRIN- NELL, of the city of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ristband-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
y end view.
The above views are drawn to a scale of three times their actual size, and the same "ters of reference allude to similar parts "nroughout the drawing.
A, A are the two ends of a Wristband furnished with the usual button holes a and a. l i
B is the external plate or shield of the fastener, which may be engraved, or otherwise ornamented with any suitable device, or be inlaid with cameos, or fancy stones; this plate is connected by means of metal strips CZ, cZ, to the lower buttons c and e. To the button e is soldered or otherwise secured a metallic spring 7 the end of which bears against the face of the button e. The fastener thus constructed is attached to the end A of t-he Wristband by sliding the -outside end of the button hole between the spring 7 and the button e, and afterward drawing it in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 3) when the sides of the button hole may be easily expanded, so that the end A of the Wristband may assume the position shown in Fig. 3, that is with the button hole surrounding the connecting strip cl, between the external plate B and button e. The other end A of the Wristband is then passed between the spring f, and butt-on e, the edges of the button hole expanded, and passed over the said button, so as to surround the connection d, thus connecting the two ends of the Wristband together.
Should the end A of the Wristband escape from its fastening, it would be next to an impossibility, on account of the spring f, for the other end to escape, and thus the loss of fasteners, common to those of ordinary construction is avoided.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The external plate B, with its connections CZ and d and buttons e and e, in combination with the spring f, the Whole being constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
B. F. GrRINNELl Vitnesses:
VILLIAM E. WALTON, T. I. MCDONOUGH.
