Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views illustrating the operation of the present invention when used in conjunction with latch needles.
The needle bed 1 supported by the frame 2 is provided with a portion 3 extending outwardly in the direction of the needles 4 and wherein the needles are guided during their reciprocatory movement actuated by usual cams on a slide 6. In the usual knitting machines the outer end of the needles is rounded. According to the present invention the needles are provided with sharp points because the ends of these needles are intended to be passed through the work during the mending operation of the machine. At the outer end of the needle bed there are arranged usual, fingers 8 (so-called platines or releasing combs) and transversely above these fingers 8 there is arranged an upwardly yielding latch opener 9 which is pivotally connected at 13 to the needle bed extension 3.

On the needle bed 1 there is arranged a hollow work holder 20 for the work 21. This holder is pivoted on pins 22 and 23 on the needle bed and be swung transversely against the pressure of a spring 24. The work 21, in which a hole 27 is to be mended, is stretched on the holder (Figs. 45) in such a manner that said hole is located as a wall closing the outer end of the hollow part of the holder between its side walls 28 (see Figure 5). The work, for instance a stocking, is fastened to the holder preferably by means of an endless spring 30 or by other elastic means such as a rubber band, which is pulled over the work around the root of the work holder. During the working operation the work holder is loaded by weights so as to turn step by step on the pivots 22, 23 in a manner similar to that used in knitting machines.
The holder 20 may be provided at its inner end with lateral projections 29 upon which the free portions of the work can rest.
On the slide 6 which may be moved transversely to the bed 1 is mounted an overhanging arm 35 carrying in substantially right angle relation thereto an extension 36, the end of which may be given the form of a. flat plate 36, which at the reciprocating transverse movement of the slide 6 is moved in front of the opening in the holder 20 covered by the work. This plate is provided at its thrown outwards by the needles.
lower part with a longish opening 37 through which the needles 4 may project during their working operation. -As the work is located between said plate 36 and the holder 20 the plate 36 will prevent the work from being Said opening 37 is limited upwards by a rib 39, the lower side of which is provided with a sharp edge adapted to effect the opening of the latches 4 if they should not have been opened already by the latch opener 9 proper. Said rib 39 and edge 40 may also provide for a pressing action on the needle hooks when the needles are withdrawn as shown in Fig. 8. On the plate 36 in front 0f the rib 39 there is arranged a bar or bow 42 adapted to prevent the latches 4 from being thrown unintentionally forwards into a closing position at a wrong time, viz: before the thread has been placed into the needles. This bar 42 may also be placed on the thread-carrier 44 and may consist of a flat, longish strip 42 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, which indicate a side view and a rear view respectively of the thread carrier with the strip 42 fastened to it.
In order that the operation of the element 42 ma be more clearly understood, reference is ma e to Figs. 8 and 9 showing the position of the needles at two difl erent times during their movement and also the relation of their latches to the element 42. Fig. 8 shows the needle in its outermost position ready to receive the thread, and Fig. 9 shows the needle after it has been retracted somewhat into the needle bed.
As the needle moves forward the latch 4 is opened by the latch opener 9. During the passage of the thus opened needle through the slot 37, the plate 45 is engaged and slightly raised, the plate 45 yielding upwardly and outwardly to permit the passage of the opened needle beneath it. The needle then continues to its outermost position shown in Fig. 8. At the moment that the needle stops, the latch 4 because of its inertia, has a. tendency to tilt upward and would close the needle were it not prevented from doing so by striking against the bar 42. The same effect should be achieved if the bar 42 were replaced by a fiat, longish strip 42' mounted on the thread carrier 44 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
When the thread has been placed in the needle in the customary manner, and the needle begins its rearward movement, the end of the latch engages the plate 45, and on continued retraction of the needle, raises up and drops over to close the needle as shown in Fig. 9. On the further retraction of the needle through the slot 37, the plate 45 rides over the top of the closed latch, and in so doing,.yields to permit the return passage of the needle beneath it. When the needle has been withdrawn completely from the slot, the springs 49, return the plate 45 to its original position.
On the frame 36 there is also arranged a latch closer consisting of a thin plate 45 provided at its lower portion with a sharp edge 46. Said edge is at its ends 47 and 48 inclined for the purpose of sliding more easily across the outwardly projecting needles 4 during the transverse movement of the slide 6 with arm 35, plate 36 and associated parts. The said plate 45 is mounted yieldingly and is pulled downwards by means of a spring 50, guided and supported by screws 51 pasing through slots 52 in the plate in such a manner, that said plate 45 is capable of moving upwards as well as a little outwards, and it is brought back to its initial position by means of a loop 49 forming part of the spring 50. Said plate 45 is preferably mounted on a separate part 55, which is adjustably connected to the frame 36 by means of a screw 56.
Claims:
1. In a machine for mending knitted, woven and similar articles, having a frame carrying a needle bed provided with a plurality of reciprocating latch needles and a latch opening member, a support for preventing the work from rising with the needles slidably mounted on said frame and adapted to be moved back and forth thereon across the ends of said needles, said support having a slot therein limited on one edge by a rib provided with an inwardly directed flange adapted to engage and open such of the needle latches as are not opened by said latch opening member during extension of said needles.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, characterized by the provision of a latch closing member mounted on the support, said closing member having an edge portion thereof adapted to engage the needle latches which edge is disposed adjacent the flanged edge of the slot.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1, characterized by the provision of a bar carried by the support in front of the slot and adapted to prevent the closing of the needle latches during the outward movement of the needles through the slot.
4. Apparatus according to claim 1, charac terized by the provision of a spring pressed latch closing member pivotally mounted in the support adjacent the flanged edge of the slot, sald closing member being adapted to yield in an upward and an outward direction against the action of said spring during the outward movement of the needles through the slot.

Apparatus according to claim 1, characterized by the provision of a latch closing member comprising a thin plate mounted on the support, and having one edge thereof adapted to engage the needle latches disposed adjacent the slot, said edge having inclined portions at its extremities to facilitate the transverse movement of said plate 4 across the needles.

In a machine for mending knitted, woven and similar articles, having a frame carrying a needle bed provided with a plurality of reciprocating latch needles, a yieldable latch opening member mounted on said needle bed, said member consisting of a flat strip arranged in an inclined position transversely above said needle bed in such manner that itsouter edge is spaced farther from said needle bed than its inner edge, and a support 7 for preventing the work from rising with the needles slidably mounted on said frame and adapted to be moved back and forth across the ends of said needles, said support having a slot therein limited on one edge of a rib provided with an inwardly extending flange adapted toengage and open the latches of such of ,said needles as are not opened by said latch opening member.
