Driving pulleys for ropes or chains, provided with gripping aws as at present constructed can be used only for low speeds for the reason that the tremendous centrifugal force which is generated at the higher speeds throws the gripping jaws outwards with great force into their position of rest, so that at first a loud rattling noise is produced; furthermore the gripping jaws do not open quickly enough, so that they are ejected from the pulley without engaging in the notches which form their position of rest. Another disadvantage is that the heavy blows of the gripping jaws prematurely wear away the material.
To overcome these disadvantages the gripping aws are provided according to the invention with a buiier device.
This buffer device mayconsist of a known type of buffer operated by air, a liquid or a spring or by any other elastic material; the buifer action may also be producer by the combination of several of the elements mentioned. It is advantageous for the buffer to '55 act radially and for one buffer element to be order to keep the cross-section of the rim of the driving pulley as small as possible, it is advantageous to provide the bufier apparatus outside the rim of the wheel and turned towards the hub. In this case the bufl'er apparatus may be enclosed in known manner in a protective casing so as to protect it from dirt and the like.
The device according to the inventionis diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, the construction selected being one in which an air buffer apparatus is provided within the rim of the driving pulley.
Figure 1 shows the gripping jaws in the operative position, that is to say in the condition in which they are forced inwardly, and
"compressed by the piston 8 escapes through the holes 12 until, after they have been therefore togetheigby the radial, inwardly acting pressure of the rope.
' FigureQ shows the gripping jaws-at the moment at" which the rope ru s ofli'thez'pulley, the gripping jaws are wide. open and the butter apparatus is coming into action.
In'the drawings, 1 denotes the rim of the driving'pulley and 2a pairof gripping jaws;
3 is the butter apparatus, and4 the rope. The
The b'uiier apparatus operates as follows:
WVhen the rope runs off, the grippingjaws are opened by the spring 11', the cylinderfi moving radially outwards under the additional action'of'centrifugal force; Theair maskedythe 'air bufferql comes into opera; tion, whereby a gentle, braking action'is e'xerted on the gripping jaws. Thebuiferiapparatus can be so adjusted by the check nut7 10 that it' comes into actiononlyw'hri' the gripping jaws are in a particular position,
By speolally arrangingithef' holes 12 the I action of the bufi'er can'b'e accurately determined. This is also possible: whensprin'gs are used, inasmuch as they can be telescoped into each other for example ,to "different lengths."
Another advantage the apparatus according tothe'invention is that the projection 14, whichinthe known secured by the use of I types of apparatus'hold thegrippi'n'g jaws securely in the rim ofthe driving pulley are now superfluous. j j a j I claim A I 1. Driving pulleys for flexible elements,
