This invention comprises a double multicolor web perfecting rotary printing press in which the first and second multicolor printing units are located in practically the same horizontal and longitudinal vertical planes.
This invention further comprises a structure in which the plate cylinders of both printing units are disposed around the upper sides of their respective impression cylinders so that their corresponding inking mechanisms are subjected to the same temperature to facilitate the distribution and laying of the inks.
A practical embodiment of this invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
in which Fig. 1 represents diagrammatically a top plan view of the press with the inking mechanisms removed; and
Fig. 2 represents diagrammatically a side elevation of the press.
In the first multicolor printing unit of the press the impression cylinder is denoted by l and its plate cylinders by 2, 3, 4, 5, which plate 5 cylinders are shown as arranged around the upper side of the impression cylinder. These plate cylinders are provided with inking mechanisms 6, 7, 8, 9, of any well known or approved form.
In the second multicolor printing unit of the press the impression cylinder is denoted by 10 and its plate cylinders by 11, 12, 13, 14, which plate cylinders are arranged around the upper side of the impression cylinder. These plate cylinders are provided with inking mechanisms 15, 16, 17, 18, of any well known or approved form.
The two multicolor printing units are located in practically the same horizontal and longitudinal vertical planes.
The web 19 to be printed in multicolor on both sides passes from its supply roll, not shown, over a roll 20 and under rolls 21, 22, to and around the upper side of the impression cylinder 1 of the first mutilcolor printing unit under the plate cylinders 2, 3, 4, 5. From thence the web printed in multicolor on one side is fed under a roll 23 to and around the upper side of the impression cylinder 10 of the second printing unit under the plate 1930. Serial No. 444,749.
An offset'web 27 is shown as being fed from its supply roll 28 to and around the impression cylinder 10 of the second printing unit and from thence to its takeup roll 29.
The two printing units of the press may be driven from a common source of power, such, for instance, as an electric motor 30 which is herein shown as having a pulley and belt drive connection 31, 32, 33 with a cross shaft 34 connected through a train of gears 35, 36, 37, 38 with the impression cylinder 1 of thefirst printing unit and through the bevel gears 39, 40, longitudinal shaft 41, bevel gears 42, 43, cross shaft 44 and train of gears 45, 46, 47, 48 with the impression cylinder 10 of the second printing unit.
From the above description it will be seen that by placing the two printing units in the same horizontal plane and by locating the plate cylinders of the two printing units around the upper sides of their respective impression cylinders, a number of advantageous results are obtained. This arrangement permits the use of two similar printing units with corresponding members in the same horizontal plane. It also permits the corresponding inking mechanisms of the two printing units to be subjected to the same temperature to facilitate the distributing and laying of the inks. This arrangenient also ensures a downward pressure at all times on the impression cylinder shaft bearings.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
