DOUBLE MULTICOLOR WEB PERFECTING ROTARY PRINTING PRESS Nov. 24, 1931.
Filed April 16. 1930 INVENTOR M mzf ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOWARD OI PAWCAT'UCK, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO 0. BPCOTTRELL & SONS COMPANY, OF WEBTERLY, RHODE ISLAND, A. CORPORATION 01' DELAWARE DOUBLE IULTICOLOB PEBFECTIKG ROTARY PRINTING PRESS Application filed April 18, 1980. Serial No. 444,748.
This invention comprises a double multicolor web perfecting rotary printing ress m which the printing units are locate in the same longitudinal vertical plane but in different horizontal planes.
This invention further comprises a structure in which the plate cylinders of one printing unit are disposed around the upper side of their impression cylinder and the plate 19 cylinders of the other printin unit are disposed around the lower side 0 their impression cylinder.
A practical embodiment of this invention is represented in the accompanyingdrawings,
in which Fig. 1 re resents diagrammatically a top plan view 0 the press with the inking mechanisms removed; and
Fig. 2 re resents diagrammatically a side elevation o the press.
In the first multicolor printing unit of the press the impression cylinder is denoted by 1 and its plate cylinders by 2, 3, 4, 5, whic plate cylinders are shown as arranged around the upper side of the impression cylinder.
These plate cylinders are provided with inking mechanisms 6, 7 8, 9 of any well known or approved form.
I In the second multicolor printing unit of the'press the impression cylinder is denoted by 10 and its plate cylinders by 11, 12, 13, 14 which late cylinders are arranged around the un er side of the impression cylinder. These plate cylinders are provided with inking mechanisms 15, 16,17, 18 of any well known or approved form.
The two multicolor printing units are arranged in the same longitudinal vertical plane but in different horizontal planes. I
The web 19 to be printed in multicolor on both sides passes from its supply roll, not shown, over a roll 20 and under a roll 21 to and around the upper side of the impression c linder l of the first printin unit under t e plate cylinders 2, 3, 4, 5. rom thence the web printed in multicolor on one side is fed under the roll 22 to and over a roll 23 and around the under side of the impression cylinder 10 of thefsecond printing unit be- 9 tween said impression cylinder, and the plate such, for instance as anelectric motor 30 which is herein shown as having a pulley and belt drive connection 31, 32, 33 with a cross shaft 34 connected through a train of gears 35, 36, 37, 38 with the impression cylinder 1 of the first printing unit and through the bevel gears 39, 40, shaft 41," bevel gears 42, 43, shaft 44 and train of gears 45, 46, 47, 48 with the impression cylinder 10 of the second printing unit.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a structure in which the two printing units are arranged in the same longitudinal vertical, plane but in different horizontal planes, the two units being so related as to facilitate the passage of the we'b therethrough with a minimum distance-t0 traveL' It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. In a double four color web perfecting rotary printing press, first and second multicolor printing units arranged in the same longitudinal vertical plane but in different horizontal planes, each printing unit comprising an impression cylinder. and four plate cylinders, the four plate cylinders of one printing unit being arranged around the upper side of their impression cylinder and the four plate cylinders of the other printing unit being arranged around the under side of their im ression. cylinder.
2. In a ouble four color web perfecting rotary printing press first and second multicolor printing units arranged in the same lon r'tudinal vertical plane but in difierent horizontal planes, eac printing unit com- 5 prisin animpression cIyhnder and four late cylin ers, the four p ate cylinders o the first printing unit being arranged around the upper side of their impression cylinder and the four late cylinders of the second printin unit ing arranged around the under si e of their impression cylinder.
8. In a double four color web, perfecting rotary printing press, first and second multicolor printing units, each com rising an im- 15 pression c linder and four p ate cylinders,
the four p ate cylinders of one printin unit being arranged around the upper side 0? their impression cylinder and the four late cylinders of the other printin unit ing ary 0 ranged around the under si e of their other impresaioncylinder.
4. In a double four color web perfecting rotary printing press, first and second multicolor printing units, each com rising an imw pression c linder and four p ate cylinders,
the four p ate cylinders of the first printing 4 unit bein arranged around the up r sideof their impression cylinder and t e four late cylinders of the second printing unit ing arranged around the under side of their impression cylinder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have-signed my name this llth'day of April, 1930.
