The roof shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is supported by ridge pole 20 and purlins 21 which rest upon a horizontal rib 22 formed integral with the flange 5 of the end plate, which rib merges into the flanges 23 of the extensions 7 and is preferably increased in width (24) toward said extensions to provide a gusset effect. This rib stiflens the upper margin of the end plate flange against the tendency of the car to weave in service and also the tendency of the roof to shift by its inertia when the car stops. 7 j
I also prefer to provide brackets which stiffen the relation between the flange 5 and web 4 of the end plate and also may be altered to support the running board bracket 27 In the form shown in Fi gs. 7, 8 and 9 the end plate is provided with an outwardly extending flange 30 supporting the roof 31 to which it is secured. The flangeconforms to the slope of the roof whether it be rounded, as shown, or apexed. Brackets 3233 are provided to support the longitudinal roof framing members when they are used. In this modification the upper flange 5 is provided with a gusset 34 which extends over the side plate 2 and merges into the extension 7. The corner post is omitted and the end wall 12 is provided with a flange 35 which is secured to the member 36 which is an integral part of the end plate. The side wall 38 (shown as wood) is secured to the flange 35. These figures, 7, 8 and 9, also show a load lifting beam 36 which preferably extends longitudinally of the car and is spaced apartfrom the root sheets so that a chain, hook or other load lifting apparatus may be conveniently attached to it. This beam is supported by the bracket 33 which is integral with the end plate. Numeral 39 shows the running board bracket.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof, within the scope of the claims, will occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a railway car, the combination of side plates, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates formed at each end with a Z-shaped lateral extension secured to the adjacent side plate.
2. In a railway car, the combination of Z-shaped side plates, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates formed at each end with a Z-shaped lateral extension ogeplapping and secured to the adjacent side p a e.
3. In a railway car, the combination of Z-shaped side plates, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates formed at each end with a Z-shaped lateral extension secured to the flan es of the adjacent side plate.
l. In a railway car, thecombination of Z-shaped side plates, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates formed at each end with a 'Z-shaped lateral extension secured to the web and flanges of the adjacent side plate.
5. In a railway car, the combination of side plates, Z-shaped corner posts, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates and said corner posts formed at each end with a lateral extension secured to the adjacent side plate, said member also formed with a part at each end secured to the adjacent corner'post.
6. In a railway car, the combination of side plates, corner posts, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates and said corner posts formed at each end with a lateral extension overlapping and secured to the adjacent side plate, said member also formed with a part at each end overlapping and se-' cured to the adjacent corner post.
7. In a railway car, the combination of side plates, Z-shaped corner posts, and a single piece cast metal. member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates and said corner posts formed at each end with a lateral extension secured to the adjacent side plate, said member also formed with. a part at each end secured to the flanges of the adjacent corner post.
8. In a railway car, the combination of Z-shaped side plates, Z-shaped corner posts, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates and said corner. posts formed at each end with aZ-shaped lateral extension secured to the web and flanges of the adjacent side plate, said member also formed with a part at each end secured to the web and flanges of the adjacent corner post. v i
9. In a railway car, the combination of side plates, a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates form-ed at each end with a lateral extension secured to the adjacent side plate, and a roof secured to said port-ion and said extensions. j
10. In a railway car, the combination of side plates, and a single piece cast metal member comprising a Z-shaped portion extending between said plates formed at each end with a lateral extension secured to the adjacent side plate, said portion provided with an integral flange arranged to support posts and end wall.
