END REENFORCEMENT FOR RAILWAY CARS.

A great many wooden frame box cars are in service, the end framing of which consists of wooden end plate, end sills, corner post, end post and diagonal braces, which wooden end framing is sheat ied on the outside and lined on the inside with wooden planking. Such wooden constructed cars are not strong enough to meet present railroad operating conditions. v
V The modern classification hump, heavy locomotive, emergency air brake and other operating conditions break the lading away from its moorings and throw it violently against the end of the car, breaking the end framing described above. This framing fails by the wooden end plate breaking in its middle, or (2) breaking adjacent the top of the end post where it is weakened by the hole for the vertical tie rod; by the breaking of the attachments securing the end plate to the side plate; (4;) by the end post breaking between its extremities; (5) by the end post breaking away from the end plate at its top,
or (6) by the end post breaking away from the end sill at its bottom.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide means to reenforce the framing of an old wooden boX car to prevent the failures mentioned hereinbefore.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a reenforcement so that it Can be applied to the end sill, endplate and corner post without removing such parts from the car.
Another object oi'the invention is to provide means for attaching a diagonal'bracing to such reenforcement or stiffener to transmit the thrust imposed on the end lining back to the side plates of the car, thus relieving the wooden end plate of these stresses. In the drawings the end sill 1; end plate 2; end post 19; corner post 4; diagonal bracing 5; and lining 7 constitute the end framing referred to. The side framing is partially shown by side sills 8; side plates 9 and side lining 10.
The end plate stiffener is a rolled or pressedv Z-bar 11 having a vertical portion positioned on the inside of the end plate 2 and secured thereto by bolts 12. This ver tical portion is provided with flange 33 which extends back and isse-cured to the inside of the side plate '9 by bolts 13.
The Z-bar stiffener 11 has an upper flange 14 to which the diagonal bracing members 15 and 16 are secured. braces 15 and 16 are secured to the Z-bar 11 adjacent the tops of metallic end post 19 and extend back toward'the middle of the car and are secured to the side plates 9 by bolts 17. The drawings show a cross diagonal bracing, however, any form of bracing may be used and still come within the scope of this invention.
The Z-bar stiffener 11 is provided with a lower horizontal flange 18 to which the metallic end post 19 is secured. Wooden nailing strips 20 are secured to this end post 19 to which the lining 7 is nailed. This flange 18 is provided at its opposite ends with flanges 30 which are secured to the corner post 4 by bolts 21. An outside sheathing may or may not be applied as desired.
The end sill 1 is reen'forced by a pressed or rolled Z-bar reenforcing member 22 which is provided with a downwardly extending flange 23 secured to the end sill 1 by bolts 24. The Z-ba r reenforcement 22 has an upwardly extending inner flange 25 to whichthe metallic end post 19 is secured by connecting angles 26 and 27. The horizontal web is provided with upwardly extending flanges 29 at its opposite extremities which aresecured to the corner post i by bolts 28.
The vertical flange 23 of the lower Z-bar is provided with flanges 31 at its opposite ends which extend back and are secured to the outer face of tie side sill 8 by bolts 34.
The flanges 29 of the lower Z-bar reentorcement and the flanges ot' the upper Z-bar stiffener brace "the end framing against the lateral weaving of the car.
These diagonal In repairing old Wooden cars it is found necessary to replace the sl'ieathing; because it has rotted and to replace the lining because it has been broken to pieces by the shifting lading. In applying my device to an old car the sheathing, lining, end post and end braces are removed; the upper 2;- bar 11, lower Z-bar 22 and the end post reen'forcemenls 19 are all-riveted together in the shop. The diagonal braces and i6 and their gusset member 32 are also rivetet together in the shop. These assembled parts are brought to the car and installed as units.
The end nailing strips 520 and diagonal braces 5 are then installed and the lining; 7 is nailed thereto and. the car is completed, It is readily seen that this is a very simple and economical process.
I-claim:
1. In a railway car, the combination of end posts, corner posts, side sills, an end sill, and a Z-shaped reen'lorcing member having a horizontal Web secured to said end sill and said end. posts, a rear vertical flange secured to said end posts, a front vertical flange secured to said end sill and provided with flanges secured to said side sills.
