MARTIN CARROLL, ,OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI CONCRETE INSERT Application filed. March 20, 1930'. Serial No. 437,322.
My invention relates to improvements in concrete inserts.
It relates particularly to concrete inserts adapted for embedding in a wall and for supporting bolts in positions for insertion through beams or bars which are to be attached to said walls.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a concrete insert, of the kind described,
with novel means for supporting and securely holding a bolt, which means permit the bolt to be adjusted radially laterally in all directions so aslto enable the bolt to enter an adjacent hole provided in the bar or beam which is to be supported thereby.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel insert of the kind described, which is simple, cheap, strong, durable, not likely to get out of order, which is easily and quickly mounted in operative position in a concrete form, which permits a maximum range of adjustment in all directions ot the bolt supported thereby, and which-will yieldingly grip the bolt so as to hold it in the position to which it may be adjusted.

Rotatably fitted in the housing 1 is a U shaped anchor member 2, the arms of which are resilient and converge toward each other outwardly, and which at their outer ends are respectively provided at their adjacent inner sides with inwardly extending lips 3 disposed parallel with the transverse portion j,

in Figs. 2 and 5, in which position the threaded outer portion of the bolt will extend. through the open end of the housing 1, and will be adapted for extension through a hole provided theretorin a bar, such as the angle bar 6, Fig. 5, which the bolt is to support.
The bolt has a polygonal head 7 having opposite flat sides, the form shown being square. Said head 7 is disposed between the arms of the anchor member 2, and the diameter of the head is such that, when the bolt is moved longitudinally outwardly to its outermost position, shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the head 7 will spread. apart the arms of the anchor member 2 and will engage the inner edges of the lips 3 thereof, so as to be held from complete withdrawal from the housing 1. l r v The resilient arms of the anchor member 2 will grip the bolt. head 7 and yieldingly hold the bolt in such position as it may be radially adjusted. The bolt is adapted for sliding lateral movement betweenthe lips 3 from one side of the open end of the housing 1' to the opposite side thereof. f
As the anchor member 2 is revoluble in the housing 1, such lateral adjustment of the bolt between the lips 3, will enable the bolt to have a universal lateral movement in any direction radially and to any position within the limits of the open end of the housing 1. Such radial adjustment in any direction and to any position in the open end of the housing 1 affords a maximum of adjustability of the bolt, to enable it to enter a previously provided hole adapted to receiveit in a bar or beam which the bolt is to support, as the angle bar 6, Fig. 5.
By reason of such large range of lateral adjustment of the bolt in the housing 1, exact positioning ofthe housing 1 in the form 8, Fig. 4, is not required.
In the employment of my improved insert, it is-mounted; in the concrete form 8 with the open end ot'the' housing 1 disposed against the innerside of one side wall of the form. in which position it may be temporarily held by two nails, not shown, which are extended through tworholes 9 respectively, Figs. 1 and 3, with which the peripheral flange 10 at the large end of the housing 1 is provided.
In this position ot'the housing, in the form 8.; the bolt 5 is in its innermost position, wholly within the housing 1-. By reason of the b'olt'beiug adjustable to a position wholly within the housing 1. as shown in Figs. 3 and 4". the housing 1 may be fastened with its open end against the inner side otthe'form 8, as shown in Fig. 4. and with the bolt within the housing readv for-withdrawal to its extended outer. operative position; after the removal of the form, and eliminating the requirement of holes in the side of: the form, such would be required in case the bolt was in the housing and could'not be retracted to a position wholly therein.
After the concrete 11 is pouredin the form and has'hardened', the form is removed. and the housing 1 will then be held by the concrete with the outer open end of the housing flush with the outer surface of the concrete 11. as in Fig; 5. The housing 1 will now be formly held by the concrete.
The bolt 5 is then drawn outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5 and adjusted laterally between the arms oi the anchor member 2. the latter being revolved until the bolt 5 is disposed in proper position for insertion into the hole provided therefor in the angle bar 6. or other bar or beam that the bolt is to support. After the insertion of the bolt into said hole in the angle bar 6, a nut 12 is mounted on the bolt by at the outer side of the ang e bar thereby fastenin said bar firmly to the concrete wall or beam 11.
By reason of the resilient arms of the anchor member 2 gripping the head 7 of the bolt, when the latter is in the outermost posi tion, the bolt willbe held in its adjusted position until inserted into the hole in the bar it is to support.
The housing 1 may be made of suitable material, such as galvanized sheet iron or steel, as shown. The anchor member must be made of material of sutiicient strength to enable the lips 3 to withstand the strain of the bolt head 7 applied in an outward direction against them after the angle iron is fastened to the bolt. The housing 1 at its outerend may be of relatively light material, such as will enable it to be easily bent rearwardly in case such is needed to bring the outer end of the housing flush with the outside of the concrete 11. The open end of the housingl will be closed by the angle bar 6, after the latter is mounted in place- It will be obvious that my improved insert may be embedded for like purposes and with equaleffect in brick or stone work, plaster or the like, as well, as in concrete work.
I do not limitmy invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without. departing from the spirit of my invention.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a concrete insert, a housing adapted for mounting in a form and having an open end adapted to bear against the inner side of said form, a bolt and an anchor member in and adapted for limited rotation relatively to said housing, and having means adapted to hold said bolt radially and longitudinally adjustable thereon and from complete withdrawaland rotation relatively thereto, said means permitting said bolt to be moved longitudinally to and from a position in which the threaded end portion will extend through said open end, said bolt being adjustable to a position in which it will be wholly within said housing.
2. Ina concrete insert, va housing adapted for mounting in a form and having an open end adapted to bear against the inner side of said form, and a U shaped anchor member rotatable in said housing on an axis extend ing through said open end, the arms of said member being resilient and converging outwardly and adapted to grip the head of a bolt radially adjustable between said arms and to hold said bolt from complete withdrawal and rotation relatively to said member while permitting said bolt to be moved to and from a position in which its threaded end portion will project from said open end.
3. In a concrete insert, a housing adapted for mountingin a form and having an open end adapted to bear against the inner side of said form, a U shaped member rotatable in said housing to an extent less than a complete revolution, the arms of said member being resilient and converging outwardly and on their adjacent sides having lips, the axis of rotation of said member extending through said open end, and a bolt having its head disposed between and held from relative rotation by said arms, said bolt being radially adj ustable between and held from complete withdrawal by said lips, said bolt being longitudinally movable to and from a position in which its threaded end portion will extend outwardly through said open end, and in said 7 position being supported in its adjusted po- 10 sition by and expanding said arms.
